The dynamic ‘El Pulpo’, a third generation tanguero, has been dancing tango for nearly 2 decades. Norberto ‘El Pulpo’ Esbrez’s father and grandfather both were respected bandoneon players; his dancing is innately infused with musicality. Nicknamed ‘El Pulpo’ (the octopus) due to his uniquely fluid style - effortlessly leading and engaging complicated movements within the tango salida such as displacements, ganchos, enganches, enredadas, ocho ‘loco’s, suspensións, cruces con cambio de peso … continuously intertwining his legs with those of his partner’s. El Pulpo is renowned in Buenos Aires and throughout the world for his thorough understanding of the balance, body positions and partner communication fundamental to this exquisite leg work. Already with numerous innovations in the Argentine tango world to his credit, El Pulpo is incessantly developing his distinctive technique and style which he will share with the Chicago tango
community and visiting tangophiles during June 24-30, 2009.
“The improvisation is me at the present moment. And, in the present moment, there's only me and my dance partner. What dance (other than Argentine Tango) is more true to what one feels? … I fly listening to melodies. I inspire myself all the time in the melody. … It gives an endless freedom, something that to me is fundamental in my dance. My dance expresses the freedom I have inside and the
music … inspires freedom.” Norberto ‘El Pulpo’ Esbrez

Pulpo’s clear, relaxed, humorous style of instruction helps students achieve greater precision and creativity. Pulpo, a teacher at Fabian Salas’ CITA (mid-March in BsAs) since 2001, has garnered instructional and performance acclaim throughout Europe and South
America as well as the U.S. He now organizes Pulpo’s Tango Week each November in Buenos Aires.
