They also are teaching in "El Andar" and "Centro Cultural Rojas" (University of Buenos Aires). Aldo and Ana Lia have traveled throughout Europe and the US in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Their style can be best defined as tango de sal?n and milonguero with elements of tango nuevo. In their classes they focus on technique and they teach how to incorporate more technically advanced figures in real social dancing situations and while navigating crowded dance spaces. Aldo and Ana Lia were first introduced and studied tango de sal?n with the masters Esther and Mingo Pugliese, Natalia Games and Gabriel Angi?, among others. Later they started incorporating into their dance more elements of traditional tango miloguero; in recent times they have also included into their dancing elements of tango Nuevo after studying with the great masters Giselle Anne and Gustavo Naveira. Their style can be best defined as eclectic as they will mix traditional salon with colgadas, volcadas, and quick changes of direction. Aldo and Ana Lia dance a beautiful personal style and their milonga will leave you breathless! The flyer and schedule are posted on the community website. You should be able to check the schedule and download and print copies for distribution to interested friends. See http://www.wasatchtango.org Alex is young and talented. He is an extraordinary teacher. His classes are highly popular at tango festivals across the world. Many of the classes he is presenting in Salt Lake City will be geared to dancers of all levels-there will be something for everyone, regardless of level, every day during Alex's stay. It has taken more than a year to arrange Alex's workshop. His schedule is tight and his travel time is limited. This will be his first visit to Utah. So mark your calendar and plan to take advantage of this opportunity to meet and learn from the phenomenal Alex Krebs. Salt Lake City is a Delta Airlines hub and direct flights are available from most western cities. Accommodation with local tangueros is available for a limited number of out-of-town dancers who may want to participate in Alex's workshop. Persons coming from out of town may contact Lorraine at 801.979.1948 or laserblaze at mstarmetro.net to explore the possibility of housing with a local dancer. Utah has had a series of storms and considerable dose of new snow over the past several weeks. Close resorts are readily accessible and ski conditions are currently exceptional. Those of you who are avid skiers or boarders might want to consider making a trip to Utah for tango and skiing! We are proud to kick-off 2009 with a fabulous weekend with famed Argentine dancer and teacher, Horacio Godoy and Cecilia Garcia. Having inherited the tango tradition from the great Argentine masters and a family that includes his sister - the famed Mora Godoy - he is recognized both in Argentina and worldwide as having been instrumental in the resurrection of this sensual dance. He has also contributed greatly to the renewed popularity of the Villa Urquiza style. Horacio and Cecilia travel extensively in Europe so it is a special treat for us to have them conduct workshops in Chicago. Don't miss a rare opportunity to take lessons from these maestros of musicality and milonga. Horacio is the founder and director the renowned tango school La Viruta in Buenos Aires. He and Cecilia are also leading instructors at the academy along with 5 other teaching couples. La Viruta hosts one of the most popular milongas in Buenos Aires and if it happens to be your lucky night, you will catch Horacio as the DJ. We are also honored to have him DJ the Saturday night milonga. With a well respected music background as a graduate of the National Institute of Arts in Buenos Aires, Cecilia has over the years built a stellar reputation as a choreographer, performer and a member of the faculty at La Viruta. Message-ID: Hi, I am extraordinarily pleased to announce that Master Teacher, Daniel Trenner, will be joining us for a weekend of tango workshops, privates and social dances from Feb 27th to Mar 2nd. Daniel Trenner is a name that really needs no introduction to most of us in the world of tango. However, for our newest tangueros, he is a big reason why tango has been popularized in the U.S. today, and has undergone its 3rd great golden age. He's the reason why gender roles in the dance have become interchangeable. He's considered by many to be the original 'Johnny Appleseed' of Tango the United States, having helped to found the New York, Boston, Denver, Portland, Seattle, and San Fransisco tango communities (just to name a few). Daniel is a dancer, teacher, historian, writer, and he will be here in Houston to share his tango stories, experiences, and teachings. This is a workshop series you really don't want to miss. And its one for me personally that I have been wanting to put together for quite some time. Daniel was my first tango teacher and if you know my story at all, you know that he's of great import to me personally. More information forthcoming at barefootango.com and this list. Eddy began performing and teaching in Europe and South America before establishing his residency in the U.S. Veronica is an Argentinean Professional Dancer and choreographer with a huge background teaching and performing. She was both the director and a dancer in Tango Review and Tango in Motion. She has done exhibitions in the World Championship in Argentina, and she was dancer in the Julio Iglesias Show. They will be doing workshops on Saturday, February 7th and Sunday, February 8th. Ruben Harymbat: Ruben Harymbat (Ruben de Pompeya) taught and performed at the 2008 Chicago Mini Tango Festival. Ruben is a milonguero from the golden era of tango. Ruben was born, bred and still living with his wife Haydee in the Buenos Aires barrio of Pompeya. Ruben has been dancing for over 50 years, having started when he was 14 years old. In those days, before professional teaching developed, he learned from his brothers and male cousins and friends. Although highly respected for his dancing, Ruben never wanted to take his dancing to a professional level. He describes himself as a humble man who has always kept a low profile. Ruben worked for 43 years in the Argentine Post Office. Ruben raised his family with his wife, Haydee, "a beautiful dancer" he says. But Haydee had problems with her knees which means she can no longer dance. Ruben's passion for the tango is evident as soon as you see him on the dancer floor. His energy belies his age, or perhaps it is indicative of the many years he has expressed himself through the dance. Ruben is the "master of improvisation" and owner of enormous creativy. Ruben is highly sought out dancer in Argentina for performances. His performance partners have included Enriqueta Kleinman, Anna Maria Schapira, Alicia Pons, Susana Miller, Maria Plazaola, and Marisa Galindo among others. Ruben was invited to perform in November 2007 for the Congress of the Nation of Argentina in homage in "Recognition to the Milongueros of the night in Buenos Aires." Ruben participated in the 2007 and 2008 Festival Tango Estilo Milonguero and also at the 2008 Chicago Mini Tango Festival. He has given seminars with Susana Miller and Maria Plazaola at "La Academia" in Buenos Aires. Ruben has also made numerous trips to Brazil to teach and perform. Enriqueta Kleinman: Enriqueta has danced tango for over 15 years. She presently teaches group and private classes in Buenos Aires. The classes are for both men and women. She is an expert in Salon Tango - Milonguero Style, Tango Waltz and Milonga. Enriqueta also specializes in teaching technique for women and has led many courses and seminars. She performed at the Third and Fifth Metropolitan Championships in Buenos Aires. She has done a number of performances in Buenos Aires including at Salon Canning, Cachirulo (Maipu 444), and at the Confiteria Ideal at the First Milongueando Festival in Buenos Aires. She has been an instructor at Susana Miller's La Academia and presently teaches at Maipu 444. Enriqueta and has taught and performed in San Diego, Iowa, Chicago, and at May Madness at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Enriqueta also speaks English, having lived for several years in New York City. The workshops will be held at Dance Connection, 3117 N. Clybourn, Chicago. She had fought breast cancer for 22 years with courage, humor and grace. Please join Bibi's family and friends for the Vivian "Bibi" Wong Memorial Event and Milonga on Monday, January 26, 2009. The event will be held at Mariposa at 4001 N. Ravenswood, Chicago, 5th Floor, commencing at 7:30 p.m. There will be a moment of silence at 9:00 p.m. Afterwards, we invite you to join us for tango dancing in her honor until 11:30 p.m. The first portion of the evening will be devoted to greeting Bibi's family, offering condolences, and sharing remembrances of Bibi. There will be an opportunity to leave written expressions of sympathy at the event. Also, if you'd like to sign an online guestbook, share photos, or record an audio message, that would be much appreciated. To do so, please go to www.legacy.com, type Vivian Wong into the search box, click on "Guestbook" in the search results, then choose the appropriate option. If you enjoy taking photos/videos, we'd also appreciate your bringing a camera to help document this evening for family and friends. The above website will be used to store all of the written comments, photographs and video. Mariposa's customary assortment of sweets and savories, and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided (BYOB). Wealso welcome you to bring a special treat for sharing. At the event, information will be provided for those who wish to make a charitable contribution in memory of Bibi to Gilda's Club Chicago, which provided Bibi with so much support over the years. Finally, it would be helpful for us to know how many people plan to attend. If possible, please send an RSVP to bibiwongmemorial at gmail.com. Of course, please feel free to join us even if you are unable to respond in advance. For additional information, please contact Michael Golde at BibiWongMemorial at gmail.com or at 312-523-9335. Message-ID: <021301c97d09$5d1ed850$175c88f0$@com> Dear Tango Aficionados, We are happy to announce that Tango legends Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne will again join us for the third year in a row in Boulder, Colorado for SEVERAL of Dance of the Heart's Colorado TangoEncuentroT 2009 events! Please feel free to pass this information along to anyone you feel would especially appreciate the early notice. As we said at the start of last year's program, we want to learn (& dance!) with those of you who, like us, have come to "love the best" in tango, as personified by this radiantly inspiring tango couple, who routinely sell out seminars and workshops around the world. On their recent return to Buenos Aires, their acclaimed classes at La Manufactura Papelera set new records with over 150 people in attendance, and their recent seminars in Europe and San Francisco are completely sold out as well. We're thrilled to be able to share them with you again in 2009. The big difference this year - TWO separate couples-only 20-hour Seminarios for you to choose from! Unlike the "General Seminars" offered in the last two years, we've asked GyG to open up the treasure box for 2009 and share with you some of the "Thematic Seminar" gems they've developed in recent years. These unprecedented opportunities for "high-level" tango in the Rocky Mountains include: - the USA premiere of a NEW Thematic Seminar "Tango/Milonga/Vals Differences" (TangoEncuentroT Part 1: May 11-16) AND - an additional Thematic Seminar in off-axis tango - "Colgadas y Volcadas" (TangoEncuentroT Part 3: September 5-10), followed by several days of workshops in a-la-carte format. For the complete fanatics among you, this scheduling offers the possibility of combining the Thematic Seminar experiences with attending the acclaimed Denver Tango Festivals on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Price remains the same as last year: US$560 Advance registration price per person per program, couples only, with payment details on the website. As the program begins to fill, we'll keep the website updated with how many spaces are left in each program, so you can decide the best time to commit to attending based on your own needs. As usual, you'll be able to sign up for the couples-only Seminarios online at our website at www.danceoftheheart.com, or alternatively send a check to "DOTH LLC" to the address below. Registration is already open for the May Thematic seminar. We'll be in further touch ahead of time with those of you attending, because we have some special enhancements planned for this year to make your experience that much more rewarding. Please let us know about any questions you may have, mark your calendars, watch the website to make sure you don't miss your chance to get in before it sells out again, and we'll see you in a few months! Message-ID: I am doing a survey of Traditional Milongas in the Midwest. A Traditional Milongas is one where ONLY music from tango dance orquestas from the 30s, 40s, and 40s is played for dancing tango. The music is organized in tandas of 3-4 songs with cortinas separating the tandas. This is the standard in Buenos Aires milongas. A Traditional Milonga may include tandas of music for dancing Latin and swing dances, also Argentine folk dances, but not more than one non-tango tanda per hour. If you have information regarding Traditional Milongas in your tango community in the US Midwest, please contact me by replying to this message. Thank you. As there has been unprecedented interest shown in our STAGE TANGO course and as it is now not accepting any more registrations, we have opened a TANGO FANTASIA 12 weeks course for couples only starting February 5th. Every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 PM we will work on fun, playful and creative tango figures representing the true tango fantasia of the 1960s and 1970s in Buenos Aires. What is Tango Fantasia? Tango Fantasia is the form of social dance exhibition. It was the highest form of tango dance before it went to the stage in a professional form. Still an amateur dance, fantasia was based on creativity in each couple, high dance skill and playfulness. Small, informal exhibitions of this style in milongas were commonplace in Buenos Aires i the 1960s, '70's '80s. Tango Fantasia was used later for stage tango routines. Traditional steps and figures will be explored in the course. Couples Only! We accept couples only for this 12 weeks course but do have a list of available single dancers. We do not match up couples however. After this class you have the option to stay to our milonga/vals class, starting 8pm. While living in Hawaii in 2002 Ernest began teaching tango formally at the request of fellow dancers. Since 2003 Ernest has traveled nationally and internationally gathering a wealth of knowledge and experience in the world of dance from various sources. He has conducted workshops, seminars and/or dance exhibitions across the country in cities such as Richmond, VA, Charlotte, N.C., Raleigh-Durham, N.C, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Nashville, St. Louis, Cleveland, Wichita, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago Albuquerque, San Francisco and Honolulu. He has also taught several intensive tango and milonga seminars in Montevideo, Uruguay and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Some of his most notable US performances include the musical Candombe: Tango Negro with choreographer Carina Losano and the famous Candombe group Cuareim1080 at the Gala Theatre in Washington, DC. During a sojourn to the Rio de la Plata region of South America, he was a three-time featured tango performer on "La Ciudad de Tango", a live national TV show in Uruguay and a two-time featured candombe dancer with the high-profile candombe organization La Gozadera in Montevideo. He has also given special exhibitions in milonga con traspie and salsa at the famous milonga/tangueria Viejo Correo in Buenos Aires. A graduate of the "Master para Maestros" program at La Escuela Argentina del Tango in Buenos Aires, Ernest's teaching style is clear and detailed, and his profound knowledge of the many forms of Tango make him an ideal instructor for both the beginner and the advanced tanguero. Maricela Wilson has trained in dance forms as divergent as hip hop, ballet, tap, jazz, modern interpretive, African folkloric, salsa, mambo and cha cha. Her first love and expertise is in Salsa, Mambo and Cha Cha. She has recently become a tanguera under the tutelage of Ernest and is now his partner in their many appearances at Tango events around the country. Her teaching philosophy is to have fun first and foremost but also to give her students a strong foundation along with the latest cutting edge moves and concepts. Together Ernest and Maricela represent the future of tango while respecting the past. They are playful and youthful with their dance. They believe in knowing the rules before breaking them and that anyone can learn from anyone else, thus they are always seeking knowledge and inspiration from all walks of life. They are an exciting new couple on the national scene with something truly different to offer, so come check them out. = = = = = = = Information From Ernest on these dances which may be "new" to us in SE Iowa CANYENGUE Canyengue is the offspring of milonga and the precursor to the tango as we know it. I was how people danced tango in the first couple of decades of the 20th century. It has hands lowered and bent knees. It was danced to early tango orchestras like Francisco Canaro and Roberto Firpo and can be danced to newer groups like Tubatango. It's fun, relevant to music we often hear at milongas, and it's enjoying a resurgence in popularity. CANDOMBE Candombe is an Afro Uruguayan drum and dance tradition that is the father of the milonga (habanera/son would be the mother). It gives much of the footwork, body movements and rhythm of milonga. It was originally, (and still is) danced by the blacks of the Rio de la Plata region of Uruguay and Argentina. It is now enjoyed by the blacks and whites of the region, but primarily in Uruguay. MILONGA CANDOMBERA Milonga Candombera is a more recent reconstruction of a fusion of the milonga and the candombe which is reminiscent of the times when candombe and habanera/son were giving birth to the milonga as a dance (from the year 1860 to 1880). The most famous dancers of this style are Facundo and Kely Posadas. = = = = = = = HOSTS REQUESTED FOR OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS COMING IN FOR THE WORKSHOPS Ernest and Maricela's visit to Iowa City promises to be new and exciting for our community. We are very pleased to have Ernest and Maricela come to Iowa City. If you wish to host out-of-town guests coming in for the weekend that can be a great help to the success of the weekend. Message-ID: <791ECF39-B167-44F5-BE8C-F9040B2E6F77@gmail.com> Hi, Daniel Trenner is coming to Houston for a weekend series of high level workshops that will open your eyes to understanding tango in a way that you never thought possible. Daniel's greatest gift to tango aside from all the really cool things he's done already in his 25 year career, is that he makes the dance so seemingly simple, and so easy that he's been known to take a complete beginner and have them up and social dancing in under 15 minutes. Speed is not his thing, its rather how easy and accessible he makes the material. Daniel has a charm and a wit that goes beyond just making a funny joke, but rather putting his students at ease even when he's discussing the most seemingly complex subject matter. - miles.
