3. Jan Glennie-Smith of Virginia recently wrote the following about Pulpo's teaching:
"Questions that create more questions, creating more questions until the questioning becomes the journey and the destination. El Pulpo's approach introduces TIME as a technique. He focuses on an attention to intention, a reverence for the subtle interplay of the body in partnership and the expansive quality of TIME: reminding us tango is a dance to pleasure not pressure, and in doing so creates a style that is soft and sensual, languorous and supple. El Pulpo's teaching untangles tautness and tension freeing soft strength. TIME is the Zen of tango: to connect rather than resist; to allow possibility rather than rushing to conclusion; to abandon expectation by being balanced to respond in any direction. It takes TIME to understand this, so El Pulpo teaches.
"Why are we drawn to tango in the first place? Through some sixth sense which suggests the possibility of a passionate connection to a feel, to a way of moving that is an emotional response. And though we recognize the potential, we come to it often without knowledge to support or to surrender. So as we seek the vocabulary and a technique allowing the expression of that initial response, we can find ourselves working so hard we forget the most important thing of all: that we are in an embrace with another human being for the joy of dancing. El Pulpo demonstrates that through movements which form questions, we allow a partnership in balance, an embrace that is enfolding not entrapping. TIME to feel the floor under foot and to extend from a place of equilibrium. A mutual agreement to surrender for the duration of the music. The lesson of seduction not abduction."
