I can't attest to the behavior of
StarCluster regarding AMI creation because I usually do my AMI
creation from AWS console. I can say that in the past I had SSH go
down if I created an AMI of a running instance. Luckily after the
AMI was completed and I reboot a few times I got SSH functionality
back without having to mount my EBS backed instance to another
running instance to restore SSH functionality. After that
experience I just stop the instance prior to making an AMI. This
of course only works on EBS backed instances where the stopping
them doesn't result in termination -- also stopping will dump all
that you have stored in instance storage. If rebooting the
instance doesn't work you can look here for
directions on mounting to another running instance to restore
