Hi Rayson,

thanks for your fast reply. So what I missed is that you have to declare
the 'image-id' of the instance host if you are creating a volume for a
datacenter other than us-east.

So for me doing

$ starcluster listpublic

>>> Listing all public StarCluster images...

32bit Images:
-------------
[0] ami-a5447bd1 eu-west-1 starcluster-base-ubuntu-11.10-x86 (EBS)
[1] ami-a4d7fdd0 eu-west-1 starcluster-base-ubuntu-9.10-x86-rc8

64bit Images:
--------------
[0] ami-ab447bdf eu-west-1 starcluster-base-ubuntu-11.10-x86_64 (EBS)
[1] ami-38d5ff4c eu-west-1 starcluster-base-ubuntu-9.10-x86_64-rc4

and then

$ starcluster createvolume --name=paulsvol --image-id=ami-a4d7fdd0 40
eu-west-1c

(note the selected image-id) worked. Sorry but the
docs<http://web.mit.edu/stardev/cluster/docs/latest/manual/volumes.html>
didn't
say that you have to declare the image-id, that's why I was confused.

Thanks for your help
Paul
