talk provides an overview of a book on the history of corporations in England in the 16th and 17th centuries, from Thomas More to Thomas Hobbes. It introduces the variety of activities for which corporations might be formed; it situates the corporation, as
both an institution and an idea, in the history of political thought and in the history of technology, using it to offer some provisional definitions of these two domains of activity and to examine how they condition one another. If time allows, the paper
will also take up the idea of "fiction" in the classical and early modern periods, esp. in relation to theater, to see if it can usefully be viewed as a quasi-technological category.
