have become increasingly fond of biological explanations </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">for human thought and behavior, including such complex phenomena as </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">religion,
politics, economics, the arts, sex and mental illness. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; ">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">Researchers probing human nature focus on evolutionary adaptations, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">genes and neurochemicals, while discounting the role of education, </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">culture
and even reason. Some scientists are even casting doubt on </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">free will, our ability to discern and choose among different</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; ">
<font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial">trajectories. Progressives as well as conservatives have embraced </font><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">these reductionist views of humanity. Veteran science journalist John </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">Horgan
will critique the new determinism, arguing that it is based on </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">bad science and may have adverse social, political and medical </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; ">consequences.</span></p>

He is a columnist for Scientific American online and BBC </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: medium; ">Knowledge Magazine and is a frequent contributor to the internet show </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: medium; ">Bloggingheads.tv.
He has also written for The New York Times, Wall </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: medium; ">Street Journal, BBC Knowledge, Chronicle of Higher Education, The </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial; font-size: medium; ">London
Times and other publications around the world.
