<h3><span class=apple-style-span>Genes from Neanderthal to now </span><o:p></o:p></h3>
<p><strong><a href="http://genepath.med.harvard.edu/%7Ereich/">David Reich</a></strong>,
Genetecist and Professor at Harvard Medical School <o:p></o:p></p>
<h3><span class=apple-style-span><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-weight:normal'>Reich
is a faculty member in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and
head of the Reich Laboratory. He does theoretical and experimental work
in human population genetics and genomics. His research program focuses
on developing theoretical ideas for studying genome sequence variation and
applying them to data collected in his laboratory specifically to test
these ideas. A current focus is finding genes for multiple sclerosis, prostate
cancer, and hypertension in African Americans, and Type 2 Diabetes in Latino
Americans.</span></span><o:p></o:p></h3>

<p><strong>The Genome and other surprises </strong><br>
<strong><a href="http://web.mit.edu/knight-science/contact/victor.html">Victor
McElheny</a>, </strong>Founding Director, Knight Science Journalism Program<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>McElheny is a longtime science writer who worked for <em><span
style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'>The Charlotte Observer,
Science </span></em>magazine, <em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'>The
Boston Globe </span></em>and <em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'>The
New York Times,</span></em> reporting on such topics as science in
Antarctica and Europe, the Apollo lunar landing program and the green revolution
in Asia. At <em><span style='font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"'>The
Times </span></em>during the 1970s, he founded one of the first technology
columns in American newspapers. He came to MIT in 1982 to create the
Knight fellowship program with funding from the Sloan Foundation and the Mellon
Foundation.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Since his retirement in 1998 McElheny has published three books, <em>Insisting
on the Impossible: The Life of Edwin Land,</em> W<em>atson and DNA:
Making a Scientific Revolution, </em>and <a
href="http://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Map-Life-Project-Lawrence/dp/046504333X"><span
class=apple-style-span><i><span style='font-size:9.0pt;color:blue'>Drawing the
Map of Life: Inside the Human Genome Project</span></i></span></a>. These
books are in our E19-623 library area.<o:p></o:p></p>
