As women scientists expand their ranks in the academy and research<br>
labs, developments in reproductive technologies and genetic testing<br>
open new possibilities for race and gender. This one-day event<br>
explores the presence of women scientists in research settings; the<br>
effects of emergent medical technologies on women in developing<br>
nations; and the impact of genetic testing on understandings of race.<br>
The event brings together a national cohort of scientists, humanists,<br>
and artists working at the edges of feminist theory and Women's and<br>
Gender Studies to imagine futures of intellectual exchange.<br>
<br>
The event also affords the MIT Program in Women's and Gender Studies<br>
(WGS) an opportunity to celebrate 25 years of operation within the MIT<br>
<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">School</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Humanities</st1:PlaceName></st1:place>, Arts, and Social Sciences.
WGS is an<br>
interdisciplinary undergraduate Program that provides an academic<br>
framework and broad-based community for scholarly inquiry focusing on<br>
women, gender, race, and sexuality. Exploring gender with the tools of<br>
multiple disciplines, Women's & Gender Studies subjects help MIT<br>
students better understand how knowledge and value take different<br>
forms depending on a variety of social variables. The Program in<br>
Women's & Gender Studies offers an undergraduate curriculum consisting<br>
of core classes and cross-listed subjects from several departments.<br>
There are more than 40 faculty members affiliated with the Program<br>
from fields as diverse as architecture, history, performance, brain<br>
and cognitive sciences, comparative media studies, literature, and<br>
political science.<br>
