Authority" explores how scientific narratives, in particular ecological ones,
become "authorized" through the story of the Endangered Species Act of
1973 and the Klamath Tribes of American Indians. The rhetoric of the Endangered
Species Act and the widespread authority of scientific discourses encouraged the
Klamath Tribe to put themselves into the role of scientist in order to frame
authoritative claims. The paper explores how the expediency of arguing tribal
claims through the ESA, based on ecological research, may risk conflating the
legitimacy of tribal claims with a tribe's ability to produce and deploy
ecological expertise. It is a complex story, told with both artfulness and
clarity.</SPAN><SPAN
