Steven Lubar, Brown University

Abstract
Most history museums focus their collecting and exhibitions on the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Even museums with an interest in
science and technology tend to ignore recent history, leaving that to
science centers and, in a few cases, to hobbyists. My talk will explore
the challenges of collecting and presenting recent history, suggesting
the advantages that this new focus might offer for attracting new
audience and providing perspective on both the past and the
present.

Bio
Steven Lubar is Professor of American Civilization and History and
Director of the John Nicholas Brown Center at Brown University, where he
directs the Public Humanities Program. From 1982 to 2004, he was a

Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, where he worked on
many exhibitions, including Engines of Change: The American Industrial
Revolution and America on the Move. Prof. Lubar has written
widely on early American technology and invention, the history of
museums, and museum practice. His Ph.D. is from the University of
Chicago, his BA from MIT.
