</font><font face="Arial" color="#000000">From the seventeenth century
forward efforts in acoustics have involved complex interactions
between mathematical theory and its application to real-world
situations, between the physics of sound transmission and the
physiology (and socio-culture) of its perception, and between
designers of instruments for measuring sound and makers of musical
instruments. This Dibner workshop in the history of
acoustics will emphasize these interactions, with special concern for
ways in which the cultural aesthetics of sound framed acoustical
research and that research altered architectural acoustics and the
design of instruments and other devices for producing sound.

<div><font face="Arial" color="#000000">Among the topics that the
workshop participants will be addressing are the importance of
scientific instrument-makers to the study of sound, the relevance of
research on adiabatic phenomena in physics to the development of the
Moog synthesizer, the relationship between Helmholtz's acoustical work
and piano manufacture, World War I and the development of sound motion
pictures, and technologies related to hearing.</font></div>
