</b>The Union of Concerned Scientists is seeking a dynamic, experienced,
and committed individual to lead its effort to restore scientific
integrity to federal policy-making. To be effective, science
depends on adherence to fundamental principles in its pursuit and
application. These principles include objectivity, the use of
rigorous research methods, transparency, and the disclosure of potential
biases and real or perceived conflicts of interest. These core values
must also apply to science-based decision-making, yet all too often in

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:</b> The Senior Scientist/Program Director will provide overall leadership in our work on scientific integrity issues; serve as UCSlead scientific integrity spokesperson; represent UCS to the scientific community, policy makers and the media; lead efforts to engage scientists and scientific associations on scientific integrity issues; oversee research and production of reports, briefing papers and other materials; develop and oversee implementation of campaign strategy and program plans; and devise and implement fundraising strategy for the program. S/he will provide direction for other program staff and consultants. The Senior Scientist/Program Director is a member of the UCS Management Team, and reports to the Director of Strategy and Policy.<br><br>

<b>QUALIFICATIONS: </b>The position requires a doctorate in the natural or medical sciences, and the accomplishments as a scientist and/or scientific educator needed to serve as a credible spokesperson and representative for UCS in relations with the scientific community. Also required is a comprehensive understanding of the appropriate use of scientific and technical information in the policy-making process, as well as general familiarity with broader issues of science ethics. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with scientists and other experts, as well as with policy makers and the media, and to effectively manage programs and staff. The position requires at least eight years of experience in scientific and public policy work, including significant management experience, and an understanding of issue advocacy and campaigns. Experience developing and implementing scientist outreach and mobilization strategies is helpful but not required. <br><br>

<b>Position Details: </b>This position will be based in UCS' Washington, DC office. Some travel will be required. Salary is commensurate with training and experience.
