Dear IDDS Board and Staff and Mass Violence Colleagues,<br><br>
I am sad to tell you that Philip Morrison died on Friday. I am attaching
below the brief note I received from Phil's stepson Bert Singer and
Bert's wife Angela this past weekend.<br><br>
Phil was one of the founding members of the IDDS Board of Directors
(along with Judith Reppy and Hayward Alker). I have known him since I
began grad school at MIT in 1974; we met at a faculty dinner to talk
about what Harvard/MIT faculty could do about the arms race and military
spending. That meeting led to the creation of the Boston Study Group,
which together wrote The Price of Defense (re-issued as Winding Down),
for which Phil was the main author and Phylis Morrison the illustrator,
over the period 1975-1979.<br><br>
I shared with Phil and Phylis (who passed away two years ago) not only
commitment to peace, public education, and activism, but also a love for
cosmology and anthropology (especially the origins and evolution of homo
sapiens and of language). We exchanged lists of new books and articles on
these topics to buy or borrow. Realizing what a renaissance man Phil was
-- with his 50 years of writing book reviews for Scientific American
covering all fields of natural and social science -- I once asked why the
rest of us generally stop learning outside our own fields after we leave
college. Of course, he and Phylis said, no one has to. Little by little,
over the years, I had the courage to follow upon that idea, reading and
studying more broadly.<br><br>
Phil was one of my close friends, a source of hope, stamina, and
affection personally, and guidance and support for IDDS, and I will miss
him enormously.<br><br>

It is with great sadness that we have to tell you Phil Morrison quietly
passed away on Friday, April 22, 2005 at home.<br>
Next Saturday, the 30th of April, from noon to 5PM his home will be open
to you to share in remembering him.<br>
In due time, a celebration will be held at MIT in his honor.<br>
