In September 2003, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) awarded a $1.6 billion federal biodefense laboratory to Boston University Medical Center. As part of this grant, BU has proposed building a biosafety level 4 lab in the heart of South Boston. Criticism by the community has been intense, but not everyone feels this opposition is justified. Are there significant risks associated with a BSL-4 lab? How will this large investment in biodefense affect scientific research at BU and more broadly? Professor Jonathan King and Sanford Weiner, both members of the MIT academic community, will outline the local and national issues surrounding the BU biolab and share their perspectives on the debate.
