The Cambridge University M.Phil Programme in Environmental Engineering
and Sustainable Development is sponsoring the 3rd Annual Distinguished
Lecture Series on Sustainable Development. Under the auspices of CMI, the

Title:<b> Building Capacity for Sustainable Development <br><br>
Abstract: </b> The impetus of WCSD report <i>Our common Future</i>,
towards the process of sustainable development resulted in 1992 in a
challenge for educational systems and institutions as expressed in The
Agenda 92 and in the Copernicus Declaration. <br>
<x-tab> </x-tab>The
transition of the ongoing societal development process into a process of
sustainable development demands an urgent transition in the coming
decades. The transition of any segment of society such as the educational
system has to respond to principles of sustainable development. <br>
<x-tab> </x-tab>Transition
is a complex process which implies handling of major uncertainties,
involvement of many stakeholders, defining common long term interests and
coping with conflicting interests on the short term. It requires changing
attitudes, integrative insights and knowledge and new skills of
participating individuals and institutions. <br>
<x-tab> </x-tab>To build
these capacities two ways are open to develop capacities:
<ul>
<li>on the short term by "Learning by doing" in sustainability
oriented development programs by and in current institutions with their
practitioners and,
<li>on the longer term in educating future staff and citizens.
</ul>In the transition of educational systems and institutions "SD
principles" should not only be strived after as an educational goal
but should as well be guiding the process of transition itself.<br>
<x-tab> </x-tab>An EU
project AIRP analysed some ten sustainability oriented RTD programs in
which the first line "learning by doing" was practiced. The
Dutch programme "Sustainable Technology Development" was
explicitly directed and monitored on this aspect. The Delft University of
Technology ran a programme Education in Sustainable Development to embed
sustainability in the faculties of the university. Principles and
practices of both will be discussed. <br><br>
