We are looking for someone with a strong multi-disciplinary or
cross-disciplinary focus to fill a new post-doctoral associate
position. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in a
scientific or engineering field, combined with graduate-level education
in policy or another social science discipline. Public policy
interest and a willingness to take risks will be considered
important.<br><br>
The post-doc will join a new NSF-funded program in emerging
technologies. The Program on Emerging Technologies (PoET) is a new
collaborative effort between the School of Engineering and the School of
Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) at MIT. PoET was
recently awarded a 5-year grant by the National Science Foundation's
Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT)
Program. The program addresses diverse implications of emerging
technologies and how responses to anticipated policy or societal
implications may shape the way in which those technologies are

The research component of PoET features faculty-student panels of
technologists, social scientists, and humanists to identify potential
effects, highlight critical sources of uncertainty, and evaluate limits
of their knowledge. Panelists combine insights into directions of
technological change, applications of technologies, and implications for
society, economy, security and environment. Over the five years of
the IGERT grant, panelists will focus sequentially on ubiquitous
computing, micro- and nanotechnologies, and genetic engineering, with a
fourth technology to be selected.<br><br>
<b>Responsibilities:</b> The Post-Doctoral Associate will help
formulate and carry out the IGERT program's research agenda, including
working on developing analytic tools, and will be the Teaching Fellow
working with faculty on the IGERT doctoral seminar. Other duties
are writing reports to NSF, planning workshops and meetings, advising
students, leading discussion groups, and assisting faculty in curriculum
and case study development. <br><br>
This is a one-year position with the possibility for renewal. The
start date is flexible.<br><br>
<b>Requirements: Applicants must have a PhD and must be a US citizen or
resident. The ideal candidate will have dual competence in science
or engineering and in a social science discipline. In addition, the
ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:<br>
