NEW State Listserves on RiseUp (We are not using Yahoogroups anymore) 2. Internship and Evaluation Reminder 3. LOTS of Environmental Fellowships and Scholarships (New: Brower Youth Awards) 4. New England Climate Calendar 5. Public Debate on Wind Energy at BU ************************************************* 1. State Listserves on RiseUp I have added all of you - from the northeast, at least - to a) your state Climate Campaign listserve and b) this Climate Campaign announce listserve, both hosted by RiseUp. The Climate Campaign announce listserve will go out 4-8 times per month (send anything you want in the newsletter to me), and the state listserves are open to posting by listserve members. A few notes/guidelines: -the email address of each state listserve is: climatecampaign-[state initials]@lists.riseup.net -IT IS VERY EASY TO UNSUBSCRIBE. just send an email to: climatecampaign-[state initials]-unsubscribe at lists.riseup.net. IT IS ALSO EASY TO SUBSCRIBE people. All they have to do is email: climatecampaign-[state initials]-subscribe at lists.riseup.net. -DO NOT SPAM the state listserves. Some of them have 100+ people on them, who will unsubscribe and stop reading them if they become too high density. Assign individuals to coordinate collecting specific information (like votes, dates, attendance at events, etc.) -Please use them to share ideas, coordinate events and actions, set up conference calls, etc. - They are a great resource! ************************************************* 2. Internship and Evaluation Reminder Internship applications are due THIS MONDAY, March 1st. If you want to apply, but can't get it in that quickly, please let me know. Interns will work closely with a climate campaign partner organizer and with their state energy advocate. The internship application and the conference evaluation are attached. ************************************************* 3. Final output of the projects are working models ready for field-testing with circuit diagrams, parts lists and do-it-yourself instructions available in hard copy and digital format for general distribution. The solar bike light project requires the modification of an existing solar LED light to recharge CR1016 and CR1032 equivalent batteries. The solar/dynamo project requires the drawing of a circuit diagram for one working model, comparing it to a second, and building a third. The one window solar electric system project requires designing and building a method for attaching a 2' x 2' solar panel to a south-facing window. The method must allow for orienting the panel to solar south. It bridges the divide between mobility and access left by MBTA buses and subway, SafeRide, Tech Shuttle, private vehicles and simply walking. It offers an on-demand, efficient, health-conscious, and environmentally-safe alternative. Campus surveys and initial meetings with administrators have supported both the feasibility and impact of such a program at MIT, building on small bike share programs at Sidney-Pacific Dormitory and Pika. The University of Rhode Island and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst are in the early stages of implementing campus-wide versions. Tech Bikes plans to run a dorm-based pilot program at East Campus in anticipation of implementation at the dorm and select other locations. Tech Bikes will make MIT the first university to implement low-cost, student-designed Intelligent Bike Racks using card reader technology and remote access for bike share, which radically increases ease of use and rider accountability. Until now, only wealthy municipalities with government support could afford such a system. The goal of Tech Bikes is to not only improve our own campus, but use it as a model for municipalities and universities that have few transportation options or are in search of low-cost and environmentally-conscious transport. For example, the Department of Transportation of the City of Cambridge is supporting Tech Bikes with in-kind donations in anticipation of expanding the program to the surrounding community. Light refreshments will be provided. ___________________________________________________ If you would like to be added or removed from this mailing list, please contact Karen Gibson, kgibson at mit.edu -- _________________________________ Karen L. Increasing dependence on foreign oil and as well as rising emissions of greenhouse gases from motor vehicles are two major reasons to be concerned about vehicle fuel consumption. The annual fuel consumption of our light-duty vehicle fleet in thirty years is projected to be more than 60 percent above today's value. It is therefore imperative that we understand this developing crisis, and take appropriate actions to address our rising petroleum consumption. This challenge will not be resolved by any single technology or policy. However, an appropriately designed combination of fiscal and regulatory measures can substantially increase the market demand for improved vehicle technologies which reduce the fuel consumption. Please also join us April 7 for a talk co-sponsored by the LFEE Seminar in Environment and Sustainability series and "Practicing the Elusive: Integrating Sustainability and the Built Environment", a student-developed, interdisciplinary speaker series "EcoStar: Advancing Sustainability at Devens" Peter Lowitt, President of the American Planning Association Massachusetts Chapter April 7, 2004 12:00-1:30 p.m. E40-496 Peter Lowitt is a leading practitioner of eco-industrial development in North America. As Director of the Devens Enterprise Commission, Lowitt launched an initiative to develop green buildings and a by-products exchange network at Devens, a 4,400-acre former military base and Superfund site. As Director of Planning and Economic development for the town of Londonderry, New Hampshire during the 1990s, Lowitt developed the Stoneyfield Londonderry Eco-Industrial Park in conjunction with private sector partner and initiated the Sustainable Londonderry program. Lowitt currently serves as president of the American Planning Association Massachusetts Chapter, a founding board member of the Eco- Industrial Development Council, and editorial board member of the Canadian Eco- Industrial Network. Having earned degrees from Brown University and Tufts University, Peter Lowitt has lectured extensively on eco-industrial development throughout the United States, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Thailand, and Phillipines. Peter will discuss the sustainability framework being applied at Devens, as well as thoughts about his career path and "practicing" industrial ecology in the future. The series: "Practicing the Elusive: Integrating Sustainability and the Built Environment" is a student-developed, interdisciplinary speaker series that is taking place during Spring 2004 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The series explores how to use a sustainability framework to transform the built environment and society through the vision and professional innovation of today's practitioners. Speakers will present opportunities and challenges of implementing sustainability-oriented outcomes by reflecting on professional practice in architecture, engineering, construction, real estate, planning, and community development. Purposes: - Showcase pioneering approaches to achieving sustainability through project implementation - Address how integrating sustainability may drive practices towards success in the future - Challenge students to frame their own careers around sustainable practice by providing concrete examples of what this means - Inspire entrepreneurial initiatives towards sustainability on campus and beyond Light refreshments will be provided. ___________________________________________________ If you would like to be added or removed from this mailing list, please contact Karen Gibson, kgibson at mit.edU -- _________________________________ Karen L. We'll need volunteers to help with every stage of the program, from identifying nesting sites to egg oiling to helping with goose counts and park user education later in the summer. If you would like to participate in nest site identification or egg oiling, you must attend a certification and training workshop this month. The MSPCA is hosting two evening certification workshops: Tuesday, March 30, from 7:00-9:00 pm. In Jamaica Plain. Thursday, April 1, from 7:00-9:00 pm. In Sharon. If you were certified last year, you still need to renew your certification by attending a workshop this year. Please contact me to sign up.
