problem was that the Expire Step on the deadline was set to cancel the work item rather than make it obsolete. Now that I have updated the expire step to set the workitem to obsolete all closes off nicely.</font></span></div>

you might see “transaction brackets damaged” which basically means a broken link. You need to check out the parent step as well as the last step that completed successfully. Often it turns out to just be a deadlock race issue...<O:P></O:P></DEFANGHTML_SPAN></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><DEFANGHTML_SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: #1f497d; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri','sans-serif'">You can try using the function module SAP_WAPI_ADM_WORKFLOW_RESUME with the top level work item – i..e. the work item number of the workflow instance.
If it’s a simple deadlock race issue that may fix the problem. If you have access to the Test option in transaction SE37 that’s the simplest way to sort out the problem.
