MIT Toys for MIT Parking Tickets...

This will only be offered between November 30- December 12, 2011

If you happen to have received that unwanted *MIT* parking ticket - this past year - the MIT Parking and Transportation Office will once again sponsor a *"Toys for Tickets'* program. Yes, it really is true!

Instead of paying the fine on an outstanding MIT parking violation, the parking office will accept new, unopened toys to settle the ticket. _**Just bring in the parking violation along with the cash register receipt to the parking office before _Monday, December 12th, 2011_**_. This program is open to anyone who has an outstanding MIT parking ticket. The value of the toy or game must be of equal or greater value than the parking violation. _The Parking Office is located in the basement of the Student Center, W20-022._

We are also collecting new, non-violent, unwrapped toys and new warm clothing for those much less fortunate again this year. Toys and clothing can be dropped off at MIT Medical, E23-205, Center for Health Promotion and Wellness, or the MIT Police Station at W89, 301 Vassar Street, there is parking available for dropping off toys, and short business).

All gifts will be distributed to the needy families who live in the neighborhoods abutting the MIT campus.

Also, if you need fingerprints for security clearance the normal $20 fee will be waived if you bring in a toy or warm clothing. Just bring in the cash register receipt along with your gift. Please schedule an appointment for finger prints with Sgt. Cheryl Vossmer at x3-9755.This will only be offered between November 30- December 12,2011.

Have you lost your MIT ID recently? Do you know there is a $15 replacement fee? This year the MIT Card Office will waive the replacement fee during between November 30 - December 12, 2011, if you bring in a new toy and receipt of equal or greater value.

Please help us put smiles or warmth into the lives of needy families during this holiday season. May the warm feeling it leaves in your heart last a long time, too!

Sincerely,

Larry Brutti - MIT Parking and Transportation Cheryl Vossmer - MIT Police Winnie Dansby - MIT Medical - MIT Card Office

Quantum algorithms for linear systems of equations

Abstract:

Solving linear systems of equations is a common problem that arises both on its own and as a subroutine in more complex problems: given a matrix A and a vector b, find a vector x such that Ax=b. We consider the case where one doesn't need to know the solution x itself, but rather an approximation of the expectation value of some operator associated with x, e.g., x'Mx for some matrix M. In this case, when A is sparse, N by N and has condition number kappa, classical algorithms can find x and estimate x'Mx in O(N sqrt(kappa)) time. Here, we exhibit a quantum algorithm for this task that runs in poly(log N, kappa) time, an exponential improvement over the best classical algorithm. This talk is based on arXiv:0811.3171v3, which is joint work with Avinatan Hassidim and Seth Lloyd.
