Title: Geometric Optimal Control of NMR Spin Systems

Abstract:

Khaneja, Brockett and Glaser have designed time-optimal controls for
two- and three-spin NMR systems by finding sub-Riemannian geodesics
on quotient spaces of SU(4) (Phys. Rev. A. 63: 032308,
Phys. Rev. A. 65: 032301). In this talk, I will describe how to
characterize sub-Riemannian geodesics for $SU(2^n)$ using the
Griffiths formalism for the calculus of variations, using the
two-spin case as an example, and describe work in progress on the
  four-spin case.

Seminars this semester will be held in the CUA Conference room, 26-214.
Talks will begin after refreshments at 4pm.
