I finally got hold of Jef Grainger today who is the contact person for the new data sharing policy at BBSRC. The policy itself can be found here:<br>

Generally it is fair to say it is written quite unspecific, and Jef confirms that this has been a deliberate move from BBSRC. Essentially they expect grant applicants to adopt current best practice for sharing data, and they are mainly expecting experimentalist who generate high-throughput data (omics/systems biology etc) to explicitly state how they will share their data.

The first round of applications that will come in after the policy was adopted is in August, so BBSRC will basically wait and see how it will go regarding the statements of data sharing, which are now mandatory in the grant applications.

Later this year the BBSRC will establish an internal monitor group which will assess the outcome of the policy, and we as OWW should be able to come into contact with this group when it is formed. This appear to be the next step to start a discussion with BBSRC on how OWW can contribute and comply in with the policy and if their will be more specific requirements further down the line.

-BBSRC do allow grant applicants to claim costs for data sharing (i.e. if OWW would charge a fee from registered labs, that would fit in with a BBSRC grant)<br>
<br>
-At the moment the policy is mainly directed at sharing (raw) data, and less in regard to know-how, protocols etc.<br>
<br>
-Very few specifications are outlined at the moment, so no direct requirements are stated outside the expected adoption of current best practice.<br>
<br>
-Regarding direct funding for service providers, the conventional routes of applying for grants for bioinformatics tools and resources appear to be the way to go at the moment. (EPSRC appear to be funding more of this type of projects than BBSRC)

So the policy is pretty much in development at the moment, later this year or early next year there will probably be more specifics to discuss with BBSRC after they have done their initial evaluation.<br>
