BBSRC Data Sharing Policy launched

BBSRC has launched its new data
sharing policy, setting out expected
standards of data sharing for
BBSRC-supported researchers. In implementing
the policy all research
proposals submitted to BBSRC from 26 April 2007 must
now include a

Research Equipment Initiative 2007 Launched

The Research Equipment
Initiative has now been launched for 2007 and has a
budget of approximately
5M. The Research Equipment Initiative provides
support (50K - 250K) for
the purchase of mid-range, multi-user,
multi-project equipment and further
funding for its installation and initial
set-up. The scheme aims to
contribute to the physical research
infrastructure within UK HEIs and BBSRC
approved Independent Research
Organisations (IROs) to enable high-quality
research within the BBSRC remit.
It also promotes sharing of equipment and
partnership between departments,
institutions and external sponsors of
research.

For further details see http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/science/facilities/rei.html

Industry Interchange Programme

IIP supports the short-term exchange, in
either direction, of researchers
between the science base and industry. The
objective of the programme is to
support interchanges that provide
strategic advantage to the UK science base
and industry arising from
reciprocal access to facilities, expertise and/or
knowledge, and an
increased understanding of scientific issues of common
concern. Individual
awards are likely to be in the range of 10,000 - 30,
000 and unlikely to
exceed 50,000.

The next closing date for applications is 18 May 2007.

Modular Training for Industry: Pump priming Masters level courses

The
MTI scheme enables UK Higher Education Institutions and
BBSRC-sponsored
Institutes to provide flexible, up to date,
industrially-relevant training
to graduates employed in UK industry. In the
past, the scheme has provided
pump-priming funding to develop courses for a
range of bioscience sectors.
The deadline for applications to the current
round of funding is 8 June
2007.

For further information

Biotechnology YES competition 2007

Teams of postgraduate and
postdoctoral bioscientists are currently being
recruited to take part in
Biotechnology YES 2007. This innovative scheme
aims to raise participants'
business awareness and highlight the process of
commercialisation of
bioscience research. Participants compete in teams to
develop a
hypothetical business idea with the help of expert mentors from
the fields
of biotech, finance and intellectual property. Workshops are
held
throughout the UK and feed into a national final where the prizes
include
1000 for the winning team.

The competition is free of
charge, including travel, accommodation and meals
for the duration of the
workshops. The closing date for the 2007 competition
is 30 June

Studentships for UJCC-NCAS Summer School on Climate
Modelling

Applications are opened for the first UJCC-NCAS Summer
School on Climate
Modelling. This first school, originated within the
UK-Japan Climate
Collaboration (UJCC), is intended primarily for UK (funded
by any of the
Research Councils) and Japanese students, who will be fully
funded on a
competitive basis. The School targets students (advanced Ph.D.
and/or
post-docs) in natural sciences who have an interest in becoming
experts in
climate modelling, acquiring the know-how needed for designing
and operating
modern climate models and analysing their results.

The
UJCC-NCAS Summer School is sponsored by the UK Foreign Office
Global
Opportunities Fund (GOF), the UK-HiGEM programme and the National
Centre for
Atmospheric Science (NCAS), and will be held at Cambridge
University 10-21
September within the Department of Applied Mathematics and

"perspectives" - a poster session for science communication

Scientists
are increasingly expected to communicate social and ethical
aspects of
their research. However, there are few opportunities for
early-career
researchers to learn how to discuss these issues in an
accessible
manner.

"perspectives", an RCUK-sponsored poster session with a
difference, gives
you experience in sharing your research with a
non-specialist audience and
provides training in producing and presenting a
poster. Finalists present
their posters at the BA Festival of
Science, where prizes are awarded by a
panel of expert
judges.

"perspectives" is open to postgraduate and postdoctoral
researchers funded
by the UK research councils. Application deadline is
