2. Research Equipment Initiative 2007 Launched<br>

The Research Equipment Initiative has now been launched for 2007 and has a<br>
budget of approximately £5M. The Research Equipment Initiative provides<br>
support (£50K - £250K) for the purchase of mid-range, multi-user,<br>
multi-project equipment and further funding for its installation and initial<br>
set-up. The scheme aims to contribute to the physical research<br>
infrastructure within UK HEIs and BBSRC approved Independent Research<br>
Organisations (IROs) to enable high-quality research within the BBSRC remit.<br>
It also promotes sharing of equipment and partnership between departments,<br>
institutions and external sponsors of research.<br>

3. Industry Interchange Programme<br>

IIP supports the short-term exchange, in either direction, of researchers<br>
between the science base and industry. The objective of the programme is to<br>
support interchanges that provide strategic advantage to the UK science base<br>
and industry arising from reciprocal access to facilities, expertise and/or<br>
knowledge, and an increased understanding of scientific issues of common<br>
concern. Individual awards are likely to be in the range of £10,000 - £30,<br>
000 and unlikely to exceed £50,000.<br>

6. Biotechnology YES competition 2007<br>

Teams of postgraduate and postdoctoral bioscientists are currently being<br>
recruited to take part in Biotechnology YES 2007. This innovative scheme<br>
aims to raise participants' business awareness and highlight the process of<br>
commercialisation of bioscience research. Participants compete in teams to<br>
develop a hypothetical business idea with the help of expert mentors from<br>
the fields of biotech, finance and intellectual property. Workshops are held<br>
throughout the UK and feed into a national final where the prizes include<br>
£1000 for the winning team.<br>

The competition is free of charge, including travel, accommodation and meals<br>
for the duration of the workshops. The closing date for the 2007 competition<br>

9. Studentships for UJCC-NCAS Summer School on Climate Modelling<br>

Applications are opened for the first UJCC-NCAS Summer School on Climate<br>
Modelling. This first school, originated within the UK-Japan Climate<br>
Collaboration (UJCC), is intended primarily for UK (funded by any of the<br>
Research Councils) and Japanese students, who will be fully funded on a<br>
competitive basis. The School targets students (advanced Ph.D. and/or<br>
post-docs) in natural sciences who have an interest in becoming experts in<br>
climate modelling, acquiring the know-how needed for designing and operating<br>
modern climate models and analysing their results.<br>

The UJCC-NCAS Summer School is sponsored by the UK Foreign Office Global<br>

aspects of their research. However, there are few opportunities for<br>

"perspectives", an RCUK-sponsored poster session with a difference, gives<br>
you experience in sharing your research with a non-specialist audience and<br>
provides training in producing and presenting a poster. Finalists present<br>
their posters at the BA Festival of Science, where prizes are awarded by a<br>
panel of expert judges.<br>
