[OWW-SC] all research proposals submitted to BBSRC from 26April2007 must now include a statement on data sharing.

In light of recent discussions, I wanted to share a quick anecdote of
someone who *didn't* put some work on OWW.

A group was publishing a paper. As with most scientific papers, the
graduate student had some extra work that didn't make the final cut
into the paper. So the student pitched the idea of republishing the
paper on OpenWetWare with the additional data to their PI.

The PI refused for several reasons
1) they don't like the idea of their being multiple versions of the
paper available
2) they don't like the idea of their work being available in a form
that can change
3) they don't like the idea of trying to cite someone and having to
collect multiple versions of a paper
4) they aren't convinced by the "open-source publishing model"

Interestingly, this paper was recently published or will soon be
published in an open access journal. Therefore, technically we could
go grab the information and post it on OpenWetWare if we were so
inclined. And this was pointed out to the PI but made no difference.

None of the points above are too surprising and all of them are
refutable to some degree, but regardless, I think it provides insight
into the viewpoint of people who don't buy into initiatives like OWW.

And FWIW, I think starting some conversations around the BBSRC data
sharing efforts and OWW is a great idea.

Thanks,

Reshma
