Hi SC people,

BBSRC is the main Bio funding agency in the UK.

I could see this as potential revenue earner for OWW. If we provided a
package for people to put in their grants, then they could put say $250 in
their budget for data sharing, and also say that they abide by a standard,
e.g

OpenScience Standard 1.0
*Free On-line access to data
*Editable and updatable
*MD5 data store, meaning that all changes are tracked.
*Permanent record that is never deleted at: Internet Archive (
www.archive.org)
*...

Then people could include a statement in their grants such as "The data
produced from this grant will be published in open access journals only, and
freely shared with the scientific community. This project will adhere to
the OpenScience Standard 1.0. (ref: May 2007) and a permanent archive is
stored at openwetware.org ref: ABC.

Maybe this could be launched or agreed upon at an OpenScience Conference
later this year, (Jason, Mac and I had talked about such a conference
before).

Best,
John

all research proposals submitted to BBSRC from 26 April 2007 must now
include a statement on data sharing. This should include concise plans for
data management and sharing, or provide explicit reasons why data sharing is
not possible or appropriate. The statement on data sharing will be under a
separate section within the 'case for support' document, and the guidance
for applicants has been updated accordingly. Statements will be considered
separately from the scientific excellence of the proposed research, however
an application's credibility will suffer if peer review agrees the statement
is inappropriate.

BBSRC will provide support and funding to facilitate appropriate data
sharing activities, and recognises that different fields of study will
require different approaches.

Further details, including links to the full data sharing policy statement
and comprehensive guidance for applicants are available to view on the BBSRC
website at: http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/news/07_apr_data_sharing.html

1. BBSRC Data Sharing Policy launched

BBSRC has launched its new data sharing policy, setting out expected
standards of data sharing for BBSRC-supported researchers. In implementing
the policy all research proposals submitted to BBSRC from 26 April 2007 must
now include a statement on data sharing. This should include concise plans
for data management and sharing, or provide explicit reasons why data
sharing is not possible or appropriate. The statement on data sharing will
be under a separate section within the 'case for support' document, and the
guidance for applicants has been updated accordingly. Statements will be
considered separately from the scientific excellence of the proposed
research, however an application's credibility will suffer if peer review
agrees the statement is inappropriate.

2. Research Equipment Initiative 2007 Launched

The Research Equipment Initiative has now been launched for 2007 and has a
budget of approximately £5M. The Research Equipment Initiative provides
support (£50K - £250K) for the purchase of mid-range, multi-user,
multi-project equipment and further funding for its installation and initial
set-up. The scheme aims to contribute to the physical research
infrastructure within UK HEIs and BBSRC approved Independent Research
Organisations (IROs) to enable high-quality research within the BBSRC remit.
It also promotes sharing of equipment and partnership between departments,
institutions and external sponsors of research.

3. Industry Interchange Programme

IIP supports the short-term exchange, in either direction, of researchers
between the science base and industry. The objective of the programme is to
support interchanges that provide strategic advantage to the UK science base
and industry arising from reciprocal access to facilities, expertise and/or
knowledge, and an increased understanding of scientific issues of common
concern. Individual awards are likely to be in the range of £10,000 - £30,
000 and unlikely to exceed £50,000.

The next closing date for applications is 18 May 2007. Application forms and
further details can be found at:
http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/business/knowledge/iip.html, or contact Dr Simon
Cutler, Tel: 01793 413243, email: industry.interchange at bbsrc.ac.uk

4. Modular Training for Industry: Pump priming Masters level courses

The MTI scheme enables UK Higher Education Institutions and BBSRC-sponsored
Institutes to provide flexible, up to date, industrially-relevant training
to graduates employed in UK industry. In the past, the scheme has provided
pump-priming funding to develop courses for a range of bioscience sectors.
The deadline for applications to the current round of funding is 8 June
2007.

10. "perspectives" - a poster session for science communication

Scientists are increasingly expected to communicate social and ethical
aspects of their research. However, there are few opportunities for
early-career researchers to learn how to discuss these issues in an
accessible manner.

"perspectives", an RCUK-sponsored poster session with a difference, gives
you experience in sharing your research with a non-specialist audience and
provides training in producing and presenting a poster. Finalists present
their posters at the BA Festival of Science, where prizes are awarded by a
panel of expert judges.

"perspectives" is open to postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers funded
by the UK research councils. Application deadline is Wednesday 16 May 2007.
