Just a quick e-mail to clarify the issue:

I was able to find the Protocols:Other protocols:Microscopy section OK, I guess my thoughts were more of a confusion as to whether to put microscopy and image analysis under Protocols:Other protocols:Microscopy, Protocols:in silico, or Resources:Microscopy. I guess since it's a wiki, I could put it somewhere, and then let someone else edit it to another location afterwards - is that the idea?

I'd be happy to start an imaging section, if you could tell me which of those major webpages / categories it would fall under. I agree that some sort of topics portal would be nice from a new user's perspective, because especially for those new to wiki's, the whole process of editing the front page or some major page (
i.e. Resources, Protocols, etc.) to start a new section is somewhat intimidating (i.e. i don't want to muck up the site, having just started to use it)

Thanks again for your help,
Trevor

OWW at the moment, so he'd have to start a section. And I think the
barrier is still pretty high to starting a new topic area on the site,
new community members seem to be a lot more comfortable adding to
existing resources than starting new ones. Maybe we should make the
process of starting "topic portals" more turnkey, or have a page
dedicated to them? I think they are currently in the 'Reference
Materials' column of the Resources page:
http://openwetware.org/wiki/Resources

We do a better job aggregating and explaining how to add protocols and
lab homepages, which is why I think we get more of those.

As for the 'getting started' pages, we email the links in the welcome
email and the help button is on the homepage and the toolbar. Reshma
also just added an icon to the help button on the labs page which
should make it more noticeable:
http://openwetware.org/wiki/Labs

any other suggestions welcome, or other problems that people have had
in finding particular types of information on the site.
