It definitely tried to deactivate and reinstall a variety of dependencies before breaking and getting in an unusable state.

I'm new to MacPorts, so you can chalk this particular issue up to a noob error, but from what I read online people are experiencing a lot of issues with MacPorts and Mountain Lion.

It might not be worth worrying about though, Mountain Lion is in dev preview and people should be prepared for things to break.

Sorry if this ends up being known/a no action issue.

MacPorts does not support distro upgrades, period. The official MacPorts instructions tell you to uninstall and reinstall it. (And they walk you through reinstalling the same packages.)
So given that, I don't understand how it could be upgrading dependencies.
It's a MacPorts issue. The problems start when MacPorts tries to upgrade dependencies for the new Darwin version. It gets itself in a hell of a mess after that.
I can't re-test in Homebrew or from source now as I'm back on Lion. Mountain Lion was causing all kinds of issues for me and it was on my work machine, so I had to revert.
Is this a macports issue or a mosh issue? Does building from source or
homebrew have the same problem?
