"In what remains of the black press, they don?t cover crises with any sense of urgency. ... There?s
no investment of money, or placing journalists in position to tell you critical stories time and
again with any sense of dispatch, any sense of trying to dig deep into a story to find the systemic
identity of the political power players who have their finger on levers causing distress in lower
income communities. It doesn?t exist.
"

Neural Basis of Drug Addiction
May 7, 2009
How does someone move from recreational drug use to addiction? Barry Everitt?s group at the
University of Cambridge has been trying to break down the stages and neural circuitry of
addiction with great precision.

Speaker:
Barry Everitt
Professor of Behavioural Neuroscience, Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Cambridge
Event Host:
McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT
"The initial acquisition of seeking and taking of drugs in a goal-directed sense depends on
mechanisms operating through the ventral parts of the striatum. This shifts to be under control
of mechanisms in the dorsal striatum as it becomes habitual.

The Art of Science Television
October 15, 2009
In a world where the public understanding of science is diminishing, Paula Apsell makes a strong
case for NOVA's tradition of depth and substance, tackling the most pressing issues in science,
in a thoughtful and visually complex manner.

Paula S. Apsell
Senior Executive Producer, NOVA
Director, Science Unit, WGBH

"Our programs have to not only be true to the science, but
understandable and engaging to a general audience with no
science background. ? So how do we operate within those
constraints, to tell a story that people will watch without
sacrificing accuracy and depth. My own husband,
true to his MIT Physics roots, once told me I needed to have
the courage to put equations on the screen."

Education Across Borders: The India Perspective
October 27, 2009
Rickshaw drivers in India are frequent victims of tuberculosis after just a few years inhaling
traffic fumes. This near-epidemic went unacknowledged until Kapil Sibal demanded a solution.
The fix, now gaining traction across the country, is a solar-powered vehicle that eliminates
pedaling. But what began as a project to assist his nation?s afflicted rickshaw drivers has
broadened into a much grander scheme in Sibal?s hands. Project 800 is a government venture to
apply science and technology to better the lives of India?s 800 million citizens facing a multitude
of hardships.

Speaker:
Kapil Sibal
Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India
Event Host:

"Can you provide solutions for Indian problems by research in the US? I doubt it. The site of
research must shift to where the problem exists."

The State of Drupal
October 26, 2009
Dries Buytaert relates a synopsis of his life with Drupal. From its inception during Buytaert's
"typical geek" undergraduate days in Antwerp in 1999, to the upcoming release of Drupal 7, Buytaert places
a particular emphasis on the community that has been created by the nature of an open source product.
