Please join the Association for India's Development (Boston and MIT
chapters) for a peaceful protest against the life
imprisonment<http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/indian-doctor-binayak-sens-conviction-and-life-sentence-mock-justice-2010-12-25>of
Dr. Binayak Sen under charges of sedition after
a trial in which evidence was
planted<http://www.hindu.com/2010/12/16/stories/2010121655981100.htm>
by
the police, evidence establishing that documents have been tampered with
were overlooked, and testimonies of individuals claiming Dr. Sen's innocence
were disregarded. Dr. Sen was awarded the 2008 Jonathan Mann Award for
Global Health and Human Rights. Dr. Sen has been persecuted by the Indian
state of Chhattisgarh for speaking out against the violence perpetrated by
the security forces and by the state-backed militia, Salwa Judum. Arrested
in May 2007, Dr. Sen served two years in prison, including a spell of
solitary confinement, before being given bail by the Supreme Court in May
2009.

We invite all individuals and organizations working for upholding human
rights to join us:

*What*: *Demonstration for Freedom of Dr. Binayak Sen and Revocation of
Repressive Laws in India*

*When*: *11:30 am, Sunday, Jan. 30th*

*Where:* *Harvard Square** Pit (Behind Redline T-stop)*

*
**Organisers:** AID-Boston and MIT chapters, Alliance for Secular and
Democratic South Asia, Mass Global Action, Boston May Day Committee,
Cololmbia Vive*

We demand:

(1) Repeal repressive laws including the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act,
the Public Security Acts, the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, Sedition
laws, etc.

(2) Suspend the sentence and release Dr. Binayak Sen and other human rights
activists, journalists, such as Ajay T.G., Lachit Bordoloi, Kopa Kunjam,
Sukhnath Oyami, Kartam Joga, Sudhir Dhawale, KK Shahina to name a few who
have been charged under UAPA/CSPSA.
(3) Disband the *Ma Danteshwari Swabhiman Manch*, a vigilante force (similar
to *Salwa Judum*, a private militia sponsored by the government of
Chhattisgarh), which is responsible for militarization of tribal communities
and has led to the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Adivasis
(members of indigenous communities) from their homes and lands. Immediately
address the state of civil war that has resulted from the state?s arming and
funding of such vigilante groups in the name of fighting Maoist insurgency.
