Many active in struggles for human rights find themselves in a dilemma
when people as notorious as G. W. Bush claim concern for women's rights
in Afghanistan. Such claims are obviously part of the pretext for
invading that country, but what is the right way to champion women's
rights in our own communities and societies everywhere without aiding
those forces that devastate so many women's lives from without? Other
resistance movements are categorically dismissed by some in the left
because of claimed concern for women's rights. Meanwhile, do we who are
women living in "western" societies have a realization of our rights
here at home when one in four women in the US will be raped in her
lifetime and the most common cause of death for pregnant women is
murder? Join us as we look for ways to build sincere solidarity
for women struggling everywhere.
