color="#000000">The Burroughs Wellcome Fund's Career Awards for
Medical Scientists is the result of the reformulation of the Career
Awards in the Biomedical Sciences program. In response to the
National Institutes of Health's (</font><font face="Times New Roman"
color="#0000FF"><u>www.nih.gov</u></font><font face="Times New Roman"
color="#000000">) K99/R00 Pathway to Independence awards, the BWF has
shifted focus to address the ongoing problem of increasing the number
of physician scientists and keeping them in research. BWF
believes that this bridging award, supporting the last year(s) of a
mentored position in addition to supporting the beginning years of an
independent position, will facilitate the transition to a career in
research and buy time from service commitments.</font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Times New Roman"
color="#000000"><br></font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Times New Roman"
color="#000000">Researchers who hold or have accepted a tenure track
faculty appointment<b> ARE NOT</b> eligible to
apply.</font></blockquote>

<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Times New Roman"
color="#000000"><b>MIT may nominate up to five candidates. If a
woman or underrepresented minority is included, the institution may
nominate six candidates. </b> BWF encourages institutions to
nominate underrepresented minorities and female candidates.</font><br>

color="#000000">The program provides $700,000 over five years to
bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years
of faculty service. Researchers who hold or have accepted
a tenure track faculty appointment<b> ARE NOT</b> eligible to

Scientists as a two-year postdoctoral fellowship award. There

</x-tab>Candidates must hold an M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or
equivalent clinical degree.<br>

</x-tab>Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease
oriented, translational, or molecular, genetic, or pharmacological
epidemiology research. Proposals that are in the area of epidemiology
should contact</font><font face="Arial" size="-1" color="#596FA9">
BWF</font><font face="Arial" size="-1" color="#000000"> to determine
the eligibility of the proposal. Proposals in health services research
or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.<br>

encourages nominations from candidates who work in reproductive
science.<br>

the postdoctoral and faculty periods, grants must be made to
degree-granting institutions in the U.S. or Canada on behalf of the
award recipient.<br>

</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>Award
recipients are required to devote at least 75 percent of their time to
research-related activities.<br>
<x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>Indirect
costs may not be charged against BWF grants.</font></blockquote>

color="#000000"><b>The postdoctoral/fellowship portion of the
award:</b> <br>

</x-tab>May last a maximum of two years.<br>

the awardee to use up to $95,000 per year.<br>
<x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>Allows
maximum salary support of $65,000 per year.<br>
<x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>Requires
that any equipment purchased by the award recipient be transferable to
the institution providing the faculty appointment.<br>

</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>Allows
the unpaid balance of the postdoctoral portion of the award to be
added to the faculty portion of the award if an award recipient moves
to a faculty position in less than two years.</font></blockquote>

color="#000000"><b>Salary and Fringe Benefits</b><br>

institution's salary scale for the position is higher than the salary
amounts provided by the award, then the institution must supplement
the awardee's salary.<br>
<x-tab> </x-tab>*<x-tab>
</x-tab>Institutions are expected to make a contribution to the
awardee's salary to maximize the amount that can be used for research
expenses.<br>
<x-tab> </x-tab>*<x-tab>
</x-tab>BWF will pay an administrative fee of 10 percent to the
institution to cover the awardee's fringe benefits, such as health
insurance and retirement. The institution is expected to cover the
remainder of these costs as an indication of support for the
awardee.</font></blockquote>
<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Arial" size="-1"
color="#000000"><x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab>
</x-tab>Institutions that pay for fringe benefits from their own funds
may keep the fee as reimbursement for administering the grant or
reallocate the fee to the awardee's research expenses.<br>
<x-tab> </x-tab>*<x-tab>
</x-tab>The balance of the award is to be used to cover research
expenses, at the discretion of the award recipient. These funds may be
used flexibly for items such as equipment, consumable supplies, travel
to scientific meetings, or laboratory personnel.<br>
<b>Faculty Appointments</b><br>
<x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>When an
awardee moves to a tenure-track position, any remaining balance of the
postdoctoral/fellowship portion of the award will be transferred to
the faculty institution and added to the faculty portion of the
award.<br>
<x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>BWF
requires institutions to make a monetary commitment to an awardee's
career before the awardee begins the faculty portion of the award.<br>
<x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>BWF
strongly prefers tenure-track appointments, accompanied by salary
support or support for starting a laboratory, or both.<br>
<x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>BWF
reserves the right to terminate the faculty portion of the award if
the institutional commitment is deemed inadequate.<br>
<b><x-tab>
</x-tab>*<x-tab> </x-tab>If an
awardee chooses to accept a faculty position at a research institute,
the research institute must be closely affiliated with a
degree-granting institution, adn the degree-granting institution must
offer the awardee a joint tneure-track faculty position with some
commitment to the awardee.</b><br>

</x-tab>All faculty appointments must be approved by BWF.<br>
