Venice, Finally out of Peril?<br>

Paola Malanotte-Rizzoli, Professor of Physical Oceanography in the<br>
Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT<br>

Paola Malanotte-Rizzoli is a physical oceanographer interested in
climate,<br>
the general ocean circulation and ecosystem models, which she
studies<br>
through development of mathematical numerical models and assimilation
of<br>
different datasets into models. She also has worked to solve the
problems<br>
facing Venice, specifically modeling the Adriatic general circulation
and<br>
wind-wave field responsible for the destruction of the lagoon
coastline<br>
during the storms. She is currently working on the Venice problem as
a<br>
consultant for the construction of the mobile gates designed to close
the<br>
lagoon inlets and protect the city from the floods.<br>

VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY<br>
<br>
The Biology Department at the University of the South, also known
as<br>
Sewanee, invites applications for a VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
for<br>
the 2006-7 academic year. The successful candidate will teach in
the<br>
Department's introductory cell/molecular/physiology class, in
biology<br>
classes for non-majors, and possibly in upper division classes in<br>
their area of specialty (9 contact hours per week teaching time).<br>
Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in the context of
the<br>
liberal arts tradition in education. The University, with an<br>
undergraduate enrollment of about 1,400, has a highly selective<br>
program and is located on a biologically diverse 10,000-acre campus
on<br>
Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau. Review of applicants will
begin<br>
February 17th and applications will be accepted until a suitable<br>
replacement is found. Send a letter of application, curriculum
