The needed passport to an academic career at a major university is
the<br>
offer of a tenure-track faculty position. For chemists, there are<br>
well-understood requirements for this passport, namely years of
graduate<br>
study and doctoral research followed by postdoctoral research.
However,<br>
meeting these basic requirements is no guarantee of access to or
success<br>
in an academic career. There are guidelines, to be sure, but no<br>
guarantees. But in spite of many undefined variables to consider in
the<br>
job search, there are ways to prepare for the process to promote
success.<br>

To assist graduate and postdoctoral students, the ACS Office of
Graduate<br>
Education is participating in a new presidential program
called the<br>
Academic Employment Initiative (AEI). The intent of this program
is<br>
twofold: (1) to give colleges and universities exposure to a larger
pool<br>
of candidates for faculty positions than is possible through
current<br>
recruitment practices; and (2) to provide candidates the opportunity
to<br>
convey their teaching and research goals to a wider audience.<br>
<br>
During the fall ACS meeting in Philadelphia in August 2004, those
seeking<br>
faculty positions will present a research poster, or poster expanding
on<br>
their research interests, teaching philosophy, and experience at
SciMix,<br>
the popular interdisciplinary poster session. Faculty recruiters will
have<br>
the opportunity to meet as many candidates as reasonably possible.<br>
Candidates will also have the opportunity to network among themselves,
and<br>
meet faculty from many more institutions than possible under
existing<br>
practices. Papers should be submitted through the the Online
Abstract<br>
Submittal System (OASYS) at http://oasys.acs.org/oasys.htm. The
deadline<br>
for submitting the AEI abstract is April 30.<br>
