Subject: New Generalized Preloaded VMs available for MIT community
Importance: High

Good afternoon,

Information Services & Technology (IS&T) has been working with the Office of Educational Innovation and Technology and others to create Virtual Machines (VMs) that are preloaded with Windows 7, security updates and bundles of software for different segments of the MIT community.

There are two versions, one for administrative staff and one for students. The administrative staff VM is supported only on Macintosh host machines as a way to access Windows-only software. The student VM is designed to be used on Windows or Macintosh host machines, but an extra step is required to configure the full features on Windows.

Download and Setup

You can download the VM, go through the initial setup of setting your username and password and access to administrative- or student-focused Windows software without the need to install Windows or the included applications.

To obtain the appropriate VM and documentation, visit the Available Software page at https://ist.mit.edu/services/software/available-software, select Virtualization in the Software Type, and click Apply.
(Certificates required)

Please note that in order to use these VMs, you must have VMware Workstation (for Windows or Linux) or VMware Fusion (for Macintosh) installed and working beforehand. Both of these programs are available from the Available Software page<https://ist.mit.edu/services/software/available-software> as well.

Documentation
(NOTE: included are important instructions with regard to McAfee and Virtual Machines on the Macintosh platform)

As you wait for these very large VMs (4+ GB compressed) to download, please read through the short

or

Support
The IS&T Help Desk is ready to assist you in setting up these VMs or using the supported software in them. You can contact the Help Desk at (617) 253-1101 or helpdesk at mit.edu<mailto:helpdesk at mit.edu>.

IS&T will release new versions of these virtual machines twice a year at the start of each semester. These releases will include updated versions of software with security and anti-virus patches applied. We welcome feedback about the included software and settings.

We hope these VMs will save you and your communities' time and effort.

Thanks,
Jon
