Colleagues--
The following notice was sent last night to owners and maintainers of all
Macintosh computers subscribed to MIT's central file-backup service.

---------------

Notice to TSM Backup Service subscribers who have upgraded
or expect to upgrade to Macintosh OS X:

Tivoli has confirmed that some files may not get backed up after an
upgrade from OS 9 to OS X, when you continue to use the same Node
(machine) name and Filespace (drive) name. They have found that
the conversion between old and new file-system codings (non-unix vs. unix)
is causing the backup process not to update file copies in a few instances.
Subscriptions which began with the OS X operating system are not at risk
for this problem.

Due to this issue we have updated client settings on the TSM Servers,
effective at 5pm, 15 March 2004. On your next backup, this should
cause a complete backup of the drive to be created separately from the
existing copy, according to the new file system structure. This new
copy should not be subject to the reported file-skip errors.

To ensure that your data is protected, do the following:
-- Check that you are using Version 5.2 of the TSM Client software.
If not, download it via links from http://web.mit.edu/software/ .
-- Start a backup session manually or wait for your next scheduled
backup session, then check the TSM Schedule Log to verify that your
   scheduled backup completed sucessfully,

After upgrading to Mac OS X, If you are unable to upgrade to the TSM
Version 5.2 client for any reason, please reply to this message. We will
then rename your existing filespace to allow a complete new copy of
filespace at your next backup.

We regret that this defect was not discovered earlier, but are
gratified that the cure is relatively easy to effect. If you have
questions, you may Reply to this message or telephone us at 253-1101.

P.S. This notice omitted by oversight one point which may concern a few
subscribers. We intend to delete the old-format filespace copies 60 days or
more after new-format equivalents have been created. -A
