Hales & Jasmine Siu Lee Lam. This themed issue is designed to examine the effects of the change in shipping and port competitiveness, their long term economic sustainability by creating and advancing new theory, testing existing theory, and examining application through empirical studies. It is focused on examining the new era of competition in global shipping given the re-balancing in container volume, the effects of the "new Silk Road", and the collapse or weakening of shipping giants like Hanjin on maritime competition. New applications of existing theory, new tests of existing theory, and new maritime or port theory development are also encouraged. </span></font></span><div><span style="background-color:rgb(244,244,244)"><font color="#000033" face="verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:11.2px">Closing date for submissions: August 31, 2017.</span></font></span><div><font color="#000033" face="verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:11.2px"><br></span></font></div><div><font color="#000033" face="verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:11.2px">Thank you,<br>Douglas N Hales (The University of Rhode Island)</span></font></div><div><font color="#000033" face="verdana, geneva, arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><span style="font-size:11.2px">Jasmine SL Lam (Nanyang Technological University - Singapore)<br clear="all"></span></font><div><div class="gmail_signature"><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><div dir="ltr"><div><p dir="ltr"><a name="UNIQUE_ID_SafeHtmlFilter_UNIQUE_ID_SafeHtmlFilter_UNIQUE_ID_SafeHtmlFilter_UNIQUE_ID_SafeHtmlFilter__MailAutoSig"><font face="tahoma,sans-serif" size="4"><strong><i>Douglas
