<h4>FEMBOT COLLECTIVE: HOW TO REVIEW MULTIMODAL CONTENT</h4>
<p class="mainText">The nature of peer review is changing, as authors experiment with new modes of knowledge production. On 17 January 2014, 1–3 p.m. PST, the Fembot Collective, a scholarly collaboration promoting research on gender, media and technology, will host a workshop at the University of Oregon that explores how we review and peer-edit multimodal content. The session will be led by Alex Juhasz (Pitzer College, issued editor of Ada, Issue 4: Queer feminist digital media praxis) and Julia Lesage (University of Oregon, editor of Jump Cut: A review of contemporary media). <h4>ERKKI HUHTAMO AT VERTICAL CINEMA: 23 JANUARY</h4>
<p class="mainText">Vertical Cinema, an event of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, will present a series of 10 newly commissioned large-scale, site-specific works by internationally renowned experimental filmmakers and audiovisual artists. The works will be presented on 35 mm celluloid and projected vertically with a custom-built projector in a vertical cinemascope. In conjunction with Vertical Cinema, Leonardo Book Series author Erkkii Huhtamo (Illusions in Motion, 2013) will be speaking in Rotterdam on 23 January 2014. <h4>THE 10TH SWISS BIENNIAL ON SCIENCE, TECHNICS + AESTHETICS</h4>
<p class="mainText">On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Swiss Biennial on Science, Technics + Aesthetics, decision makers, experts and stakeholders from enterprises, politics, science, non-profit organizations and other institutions are invited to Lucerne, Switzerland, to contemplate the political, economic and ethical challenges affecting society as a whole, as well as every single human being. Two themes are at the core of this meeting: the collective and individual task to protect the air, the common property constituting both the foundations of our descendants' lives and the future of life on Earth; and the enormous challenge that we are facing today to protect the common property of the oceans. <h4>CALL FOR PAPERS: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY</h4>
<p class="mainText">The extended use of digital technologies in physical, biological and artificial environments enables artists to design and implement new forms of art. This call for papers is aimed at members of the artistic and scientific communities interested in extended arts. <h4>CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: STEAM AT THE ART GALLERY, FLORIDA</h4>
<p class="mainText">The Art Gallery (TAG) is issuing a call for submissions for its upcoming program STEAM: An Exhibition of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts at the University of West Florida. TAG is seeking to exhibit research from around the United States that blurs the line between the STEAM disciplines. This interdisciplinary exhibition aims to create a dialogue with the intention of deepening the understanding of the relationship between science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics and to facilitate the formation of collaborations between professionals, students and the public. <h4>2014 SHOWCASE: EYEBEAM GALLERY, NY</h4>
<p class="mainText">Eyebeam’s 2014 Annual Showcase highlights innovative works produced at the organization over the last year. The Showcase celebrates Eyebeam artists’ preeminence in technology-based art and creative platforms through research-based practice. The opening reception will take place on 16 January, 6–8 p.m. The exhibition will run until 1 February. <h4>CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: ICCPR 2014</h4>
<p class="mainText">In preparation for this year’s International Conference on Cultural Policy Research (ICCPR14 12–13 September 2014), organized by the Department of Cultural Policy at the University of Hildesheim (Hildesheim, Germany) in collaboration with the International Journal of Cultural Policy, organizers have issued a call inviting proposals for panels and individual papers on the study of cultural policy and the relationship between culture and politics. <h4>TOWARD A SCIENCE OF CONSCIOUSNESS 2014</h4>
<p class="mainText">Toward a Science of Consciousness is a rigorous interdisciplinary conference covering neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, molecular biology, medicine, quantum physics, cosmology, art, technology, and experiential and contemplative approaches to the understanding of consciousness. This 20th anniversary conference will reflect on progress, challenges and future directions from an estimated 800 participants from over 60 countries. Program sessions will include plenary and keynote talks and panels, concurrent talks, posters, art/science demos and exhibits, pre-conference workshops, side trips, and social events. <h4>2014 FELLOWSHIP CALL: EYEBEAM ON THE MOVE</h4>
<p class="mainText">On 1 July 2014 Eyebeam will be moving to a transitional space for approximately two years, until its relocation in late 2016 to a new mixed-use building in the BAM Cultural District in Downtown Brooklyn. During this transition, Eyebeam is launching Eyebeam On The Move, a fellowship program designed to support artists’ technology-based projects that incorporate collaborative forms of architectural practice, urban presentation, policy engagement and other forms of meaningful community dialog. Our goal is to open up technology and raise awareness around the importance of creative ownership of technology. Towards this goal, Eyebeam is seeking applications from artists, engineers, designers, curators, urbanists, architects, policy thinkers, organizers and creative technologists to participate in this Fellowship program. Applicants can apply as individuals or as a team. The fellowship will begin in May 2014. <h4>CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: AESS CONFERENCE 2014</h4>
<p class="mainText">The Association of Environmental Science Studies (AESS) is calling for panel presentations from environmental artists who are making work that fosters cross-disciplinary conversations about environmental issues. If you are an environmental artist working in the field of art and science collaboration, or creating cross-disciplinary work that may be relevant to the field of Environmental Studies, apply to present your work at the upcoming AESS conference on Environmental Sciences and Studies at PACE University in New York City in June 2014. <h4>SCIENTIFIC DELIRIUM MADNESS</h4>
<p class="mainText">Empiricism and intuition are not mutually exclusive. The goal of Scientific Delirium Madness–-a collaborative initiative of Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology (ISAST) and Djerassi Resident Artists Program (DRAP)–-is to explore and expand how the creativity of scientists and artists are connected. At its heart, it is a month-long residency in July 2014 for six artists and six scientists at Djerassi’s 585-acre retreat in the coastal Santa Cruz Mountains, south of San Francisco. The program will also include public and academic forums, published blogs and articles in Leonardo, published by MIT Press. Scientists selected must be involved in significant art-related research, and/or be practicing a form of art and/or have original ideas on how to integrate aspects of art and science. This includes but is not limited to poetry, playwriting, fiction, creative non-fiction, choreography, music composition, media arts/filmmaking, sculpture and photography. By the same token artists selected will have a track record of work driven by the influence of biology, chemistry, physics, math, environmental or agricultural science. A strong sense of play and experimentation is essential. <h4>STEAM3: 1–2 MARCH 2014</h4>
<p class="mainText">STEAM3 (Science + Technology + Engineering + Art + Math “cubed”) is an all-ages, first-of-its-kind hybrid conference and Interactive Playground featuring speakers, workshops, demonstrations and four immersive environments focused on the future of education. The event is designed not only for educators, those passionate about education, students and parents, but also makers, learning content creators, mobile development, instructional and 3D/virtual world designers, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists and innovators. Attend STEAM3 and enjoy two full days of compelling talks and demos and explore the Interactive Playground with your family and friends. The conference will include (but will not be limited to) compelling talks on: augmented reality, storytelling and education, algorithmic art and the gamification of learning.
