<h4>Next NY LASER: 6 October 2012</h4>
<p class="mainText">The upcoming <strong>NY LASER</strong> on Saturday, 6 October 2012, 4-7pm, will include a review of events held at ISEA. Speakers for this event will include <strong>Bettyann Holtzmann Kevles</strong>, author of <em>Naked to the Bone: Medical Imaging in the Twentieth Century</em> and <em>Almost Heaven: The Story of Women in Space</em>. Professor Kevles will be speaking about art and Zero Gravity. Astronomer <strong>Lucianne M. Walkowicz</strong> (Princeton University) will also present her work. Wine + discussion @ LevyArts is hosted by the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA). Please note: The salon is open to members of the Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF) on a first-response basis. <h4>LEAF: Developing Cloud Curricula in Art and Science 2012</h4>
<p class="mainText">The Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF) Art Science Cloud Curricula workshops will generate and build an internationally recognized art and science cloud curriculum course outline. The workshops outcome will be a curriculum that is expected to become a benchmark of what we see as quintessentially important to engage in the world of research at the core of Art/Science. This workshop is established in collaboration with the Science, Engineering, Art and Design (SEAD) curriculum white paper and STEAM. The proposed workshops will be able to define and construct an actual sample curriculum that will be placed on an art/science cloud wiki. The workshops will happen in real-time with invited collaborators at two significant events in 2012: The Re-New Interactive Media Arts Conference (19-24 November 2012) and MutaMorphosis: Tribute to Uncertainty (CIANT) (6-8 December 2012). <a href="http://blogs.unsw.edu.au/tiic/">Find out more</a></p>
<h4>Critical Art Ensemble: Disturbances</h4>
<p class="mainText"><img src="http://www.leonardo.info/images/CAE-disturbances_160.jpg" align="left" border="0">The new book <em><strong>Critical Art Ensemble: Disturbances</strong></em> on Critical Art Ensemble's 25-year history is due for publication by Four Corners Press on 31 October 2012. Since its formation in 1987, Critical Art Ensemble (Leonardo 2004 New Horizons Award winner) has set out to explore the intersections between art, critical theory, technology and political activism. Composed of a revolving cast of media practitioners, the award-winning group has exhibited and performed in a variety of venues internationally, from the street to the museum to the internet. <em>Disturbances</em> is the first book to assess the group’s 25-year history, examining the environmental, political and bio-technological themes of their various initiatives. In the publication each project is presented by the group itself, from Flesh Machine (1997–1998), in which they exposed the role of eugenics in the fertility market, to the multimedia Marching Plague commissioned by The Arts Catalyst (2005–2007), which revealed the farcical failures of governmental germ warfare programs. <em>Disturbances</em> is a landmark handbook for activists in art, theory, science and politics. <strong>Arts Catalyst is hosting a special event in London on 4 October 2012 to mark the launch of the book.</strong> <a href="http://www.artscatalyst.org/experiencelearning/detail/critical_art_ensemble_disturbances_book_launch_with_steve_kurtz/">Find out more</a></p>

<h4>LEA Call for Papers: The Culture of Digital Education: Innovation in Art, Design, Science and Technology Practices, Leonardo Electronic Almanac</h4>
<p class="mainText"><img src="http://www.leonardo.info/images/lea-cfp-digital-education_160.jpg" align="left" border="0">Following the special event at the ISEA2011 Istanbul Education Workshop titled Brain Drain/Brain Gain in Art, Science and Technology, the Leonardo Electronic Almanac is pleased to announce a special edition that will investigate current pedagogic issues with a special emphasis on art, science and technology education. In addition we will include in this publication summary papers of various international educational events and workshops from the last five years. <h4>CALL FOR PAPERS: LMJ23: Sound Art (2013)</h4>
<p class="mainText"><img src="http://www.leonardo.info/images/LMJ-logo_sm.jpg" align="left" border="0">Art is getting noisier every day. Whether made by sculptors, video artists, composers, printmakers or installation artists, there’s no question but that "Sound
Art" is a genre ascendant. The Turner Prize went to a Sound Artist last year,
phonography has revived an interest in R. Murray Schafer’s Soundscape
theories, and critical writing is beginning to proliferate on the topic. It’s time for
Leonardo Music Journal to give this field a closer look. <p class="mainText"><img src="http://www.leonardo.info/images/affiliates/logo_SAIC-border.jpg" align="left" border="0">Leonardo is pleased to feature the <strong>School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Master of Fine Arts in Sound</strong> as a renewing member in the Leonardo Affiliate Membership program. The Master of Fine Arts in Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is a unique program in the creative use of sound that goes well beyond the boundaries of a typical program in visual art, music, or multimedia. <h4>The Islands of Benoît Mandelbrot: Fractals, Chaos and the Materiality of Thinking</h4>
<p class="mainText">Focusing primarily on the work of one of the most notable
mathematicians of the twentieth century, "The Islands of Benoît Mandelbrot: Fractals, Chaos, and the
Materiality of Thinking" explores the role of images in the development of what has become
known as fractal geometry and chaos theory. Nina Samuel, visiting
professor from Das Technisches Bild in Berlin, is the curator of this
exhibition, which will be on view at the Bard Graduate Center from

<h4>Studio Art PhD: Call for Applications</h4>
<p class="mainText">The PhD at Transart Institute is a three-year low-residency program in advanced studio art offered exclusively for practice-based research (creative work) accompanied by a written thesis. Transart is particularly keen on encouraging proposals that relate to its research clusters: Art and Social Technologies; International Diaspora and Post-Colonialism; Role of Art in Peace, Meditation, Performance Activism; Memory, Forgetting, Trauma and the Archive; Language/Image; Land and Sea; Liminality, Space/Place, Temporary Architecture; and Foreignness, Otherness and the Uncanny. </p><h4>swissnex San Francisco hosts The Changing View of Skin Diseases</h4>
<p class="mainText">swissnex San Francisco kicked off the series <em>Feel the Skin: A Multidimensional Approach</em> in August 2012. The series continues on 10 October 2012 with "The Changing View of Skin Diseases," a discussion on how physicians and their patients have interpreted and treated skin problems from the Enlightenment up through today. <h4>AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Studentship: Curating Art and Science</h4>
<p class="mainText">Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship at the Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London in partnership with The Arts Catalyst, London. Recent contemporary arts projects have directly engaged with, or taken as their subject, a range of sites, spaces, practices, ideas, and cultures of science and advanced technology.
