<h4>Leonardo Initiatives at UT Dallas</h4>
<p class="mainText"><img src="http://leonardo.info/images/affiliates/logo_UTD-border.jpg" align="left" border="0">Leonardo executive editor and chair emeritus <strong>Roger F. Malina</strong> has been named distinguished professor of arts and technology in the School of Arts and Humanities and professor of physics in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the <strong>University of Texas, Dallas</strong>. In partnership with Leonardo/ISAST and under the direction of Roger Malina, UT Dallas’ Arts and Technology program has started a project on campus entitled <strong>"Leonardo Initiatives."</strong> The first Leonardo Initiative at UT Dallas is currently under way with the publication of the e-book <strong>Arts, Humanities and Complex Networks</strong>. This project documents the work of 25 researchers whose work explores the meaning and application of the science of complex networks as it relates to art history, archeology, visual arts, the art market and other areas of cultural importance. <a href="http://leonardo.info/isast/announcements/UTD-Leonardo-Initiatives.html">Find out more</a></p>

<h4>Upcoming New York LASER: Citizen Scientists</h4>
<p class="mainText">Patricia Olynyk (LEAF Chair) and Ellen K. Levy (past LEAF Chair) are pleased to inform you of the upcoming <strong>NY LASER</strong> on Saturday, May 12th, 4-7pm. The theme of this event is: Citizen Scientists with guest speaker <strong>Linda Weintraub</strong> (ArtNow Publications). This event is hosted by the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA). The salon is open to all members of the <strong>Leonardo Education and Art Forum (LEAF)</strong> on a respond-first basis. Those members who wish to present thematically related work after Linda Weintraub’s presentation may participate in the petcha kutcha that follows. The event can accommodate up to four additional presentations. <h4>Arts, Humanities and Complex Networks: A Leonardo Multimedia E-book and Web Companion</h4>
<p class="mainText">Leonardo/ISAST is pleased to announce the publication of the <strong>Arts, Humanities and Complex
Networks e-book and web companion</strong>. Produced in partnership with the ATEC program at the
University of Texas-Dallas and MIT Press, the e-book contains 25 articles documenting the work
of 45 leading researchers in the field. The science of complex networks is explored within the

<h4>CALL FOR PAPERS: LMJ23: Sound Art (2013)</h4>
<p class="mainText">Art is getting noisier every day. Whether made by sculptors, video artists, composers,
printmakers or installation artists, there’s no question but that "Sound Art" is a genre ascendant.
The Turner Prize went to a Sound Artist last year, phonography has revived an interest in R.
Murray Schafer's Soundscape theories, and critical writing is beginning to proliferate on the
topic. It's time for Leonardo Music Journal to give this field a closer look. For Volume 23 of
LMJ we solicit articles and artists’ statements that address the role of sound in art that wouldn’t

<p class="mainText"><strong>Leonardo Abstracts Service (LABS)</strong> has named the review panelists for 2012-2013. The panelists are: <strong>Yiannis Colakides</strong>,
co-director of NeMe (New Media), Limassol, Cyprus; <strong>David Familian</strong>, artistic director of
the Beall Center for Art and Technology at University of California Irvine, Irvine, California;
<strong>Tom Leeser</strong>, Program Director of the Art and Technology Program in the School of Art and
the Director of the Center for Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California; <strong>Andrea Polli</strong>, Associate Professor of Fine Art and Engineering at the University of
New Mexico Albuquerque; <strong>Edward Shanken</strong>, researcher at the Amsterdam School for Cultural
Analysis at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and a member of the Media Art History faculty
at Donau University in Krems, Austria; <strong>Charissa N. Terranova</strong>, PhD, Assistant Professor of
Aesthetic Studies, School of Arts & Humanities, The University of Texas at Dallas; and <strong>Shawn
Decker</strong>, Professor in the Art and Technology Department and the Sound Department at the

<h3>Opportunities and Community Announcements</h3>
<h4>UCSC’s Digital Arts and New Media 2012 MFA Exhibition, April 28-May 6</h4>
<p class="mainText">The Digital Arts and New Media MFA program at UC Santa Cruz presents an exhibition of eleven graduate students whose works employ advanced technologies for creative potential
and social impact. Entitled "I've got something on your mind," this year's UCSC DANM MFA exhibition is the
culmination of two years of research and artistic exploration, and will include new media works
that explore performativity, interactivity and participation. Through storytelling about places,
times and players, these artists experiment with digital media to produce unforeseen,
