<h4>Free Leonardo Article: Visual Communication in Times of Crisis: The Fukushima Nuclear Accident, by Rama C. Hoetzlein</h4>
<p class="mainText"><img src="http://leonardo.info/images/fukushima_180-border.jpg" align="left" border="0">Abstract: This paper follows the development of visual communication through information visualization in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan. While information aesthetics are often applied to large data sets retrospectively, the author developed new works concurrently with an ongoing crisis to examine the impact and social aspects of visual communication while events continued to unfold. The resulting work, Fukushima Nuclear Accident---Radiation Comparison Map, is a reflection of rapidly acquired data, collaborative on-line analysis and reflective criticism of contemporary news media, resolved into a coherent picture through the participation of an on-line community. <em>This article was originally published in Leonardo 45:2, 2012</em>. <a href="http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1162/LEON_a_00276">Read the full paper</a></p>

The school has major strengths in the research of arts, design, philosophy and educational studies. <h4>Donau University MediaArtHistories, MA Program<br>Faculty Line-up for Start of May Program</h4>
<p class="mainText"><img src="http://www.leonardo.info/images/affiliates/logo_Donau-border.jpg" align="left" border="0">The <strong>MediaArtHistories masters program at Donau University</strong> conveys the most important developments of contemporary art through a network of renowned international theorists, artists, curators and many others. Confirmed lecturers for the May 2012 start of the MediaArtHistories program include a two day seminar with <strong>Lev Manovich</strong> on the 10 -year evolution from "Language of New Media" (2001) to "Software Takes Command" (MIT 2012); <strong>Roger Malina</strong> (Leonardo/ISAST and University of Texas Dallas) maps the history of Leonardo and the future of the Art, Sciences & Technology fields; <strong>Jussi Parikka</strong>’s award-winning, innovative scholarship on Insect Media; and others.
