<h3>Global Warning Symposium 2010<br>Artists, Scientists and Environmental Activism</h3>
<h4>Art, Science and the Environment<br>From the Leonardo and LMJ Archives</h4>
<p class="mainText"><em>Leading up to the <a href="http://www.leonardo.info/isast/2010symposium.html">Global Warning Symposium</a>, we will be publishing abstracts from papers that have been published in</em> Leonardo <em>and</em> LMJ <em>over the years on art, science and the environment. Many of these papers are available for free to current </em> Leonardo <em>and</em> LMJ <em> subscribers. Papers published before 2005 are available through the JSTOR digital archive.</em></p>
<p class="mainText"><strong>"Entomogenic Climate Change: Insect Bioacoustics and Future Forest Ecology" by David Dunn and James Crutchfield</strong><br>
ABSTRACT: Rapidly expanding insect populations, deforestation and global climate change threaten to destabilize key planetary carbon pools, especially the Earth's forests, which link the micro-ecology of insect infestation to climate. To the extent mean temperature increases, insect populations accelerate deforestation. This alters climate via the loss of active carbon sequestration by live trees and increased carbon release from decomposing dead trees. A self-sustaining positive feedback loop can then emerge. Extensive field recordings demonstrate that bioacoustic communication plays a role in infestation dynamics and is likely to be a critical link in the feedback loop. These results open the way to novel detection and monitoring strategies and nontoxic control interventions. <p class="mainText"><strong>"Monitoring Nature's Sounds with Terrain-Based Constructions" by Leif Brush</strong><br>
ABSTRACT: The artist describes his work with Terrain Instruments, sound-monitoring constructions and installations in the landscape and explains how they differ from traditional musical instruments and sculpture. His own approach to composition incorporates both decision and chance. Brush details his work with sound selection through a microprocessor and explains how these 'soundworks' reach audiences. The viewer/listener is asked to use new channels of perception to experience artworks that proceed from a traditional source, the natural environment. [This paper was originally published in <em>Leonardo</em> Vol. 17, No. 1, 1984, and is currently available through the JSTOR digital archive.] </p>

The new introduction this year is the focus on research and development of productions revolving around a specific topic. <p class="mainText"></p><p><strong><em>Judging Edward Teller: A Closer Look at One of the Most Influential Scientists of the Twentieth Century</em></strong> (Amherst, NY: Prometheus, 2010, hardcover, 650 pages, illustrations) by Istvan Hargittai is a balanced portrait of the multifaceted and enigmatic scientist against the backdrop of a turbulent period of history. The author avoids bias and preconceptions, and critically examines Teller’s personality, family background, actions, and the experiences that guided his actions. Hargittai corrects many of the myths that others and Teller himself promulgated.
