<p class="mainText"><em>Leading up to the <a href="http://www.leonardo.info/isast/2010symposium.html">Global Warning Symposium</a>, we will be publishing abstracts from papers that have been published in</em> Leonardo <em>and</em> LMJ <em>over the years on art, science and the environment. <p class="mainText"><strong>"Nature, Technology and Art: The Emergence of a New Relationship?" by Ursula Huws</strong><br>
ABSTRACT: The three-way relationship between nature, technology and the human subject has been a problematic and shifting one in the history of Western art and thought. In this article, the author begins by summarizing this history, pointing to the inadequacy of most theoretical accounts in the face of the growing interpenetration of the "natural" by the "technological" resulting from such developments as genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. The author goes on to argue that the convergence between scientific developments in the field of artificial life and the emergent art movement points to the development of a new understanding of this relationship and a new role for the artist. [This paper was originally published in <em>Leonardo</em> Vol. 33, No. 1, 2000, and is currently available to <em>Leonardo</em> and <em>LMJ</em> subscribers through the MIT Press web site.] </p>
<p class="mainText"><strong>"Touching the Sky: Artworks Using Natural Phenomena, Earth, Sky and Connections to Astronomy" by Janet Saad-Cook</strong><br>
ABSTRACT: In separate conversations, four artists discuss their monumental scale works involving natural phenomena. The projects of Charles Ross, Nancy Holt, James Turrell and Janet Saad-Cook are at various stages of completion, ranging from preparatory stages to works already completed. The artists speak about their own creative process and about their personal vision for their art. <p class="mainText">Call for proposals: In conjunction with the 2011 College Art Association conference in New York City, Science & the Arts at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York will host a panel titled <strong>"Into Focus: Art/Science in the University Classroom."</strong> We are seeking presenters who have developed university-level instruction bringing together art and science. <h4>SIGGRAPH 2010 Art Gallery Provides a Feast for the Senses</h4>
<p class="mainText"><a href="http://www.leonardo.info/isast/announcements/SIGGRAPH2010-gallery_June2010.html"><img src="http://www.leonardo.info/e-LNN/img/Siggraph_hana_150-border.jpg" align="left" border="0"></a>From virtual bugs to wearable devices, the SIGGRAPH 2010 Art Gallery investigates the multi-sensory nature of human experience in a technologically enhanced environment. The official title is <strong>TouchPoint: Haptic Exchange Between Digits</strong>, and from more than 250 submitted pieces, the jury selected 14 to be featured at SIGGRAPH 2010. Works exhibited in TouchPoint will be published in a special issue of <em>Leonardo</em> along with peer-reviewed SIGGRAPH 2010 Art Papers. <p class="mainText"><strong>Art in the Age of Pervasive Data</strong> is a call for papers and artworks for a new issue of the <strong>Leonardo Electronic Almanac</strong> edited by FutureEverything. This issue of LEA will seek cross disciplinary thinking on art in the age of pervasive data. It is, further, a center for research, training and artistic and technical production, as well as for the public exhibition of new forms of art and industrial creation. LABoral arose as a response to the need in Spain for a space dedicated to artistic experimentation.
