PUBLICATIONS

LEONARDO MUSIC JOURNAL VOL. 23 NOW AVAILABLE!
Art is getting noisier every day. Whether made by sculptors, video artists, composers, printmakers or installation artists, there’s no question but that “Sound Art” is a genre ascendant. The Turner Prize went to a Sound Artist last year, Phonography has revived an interest in R. Murray Schafer’s Soundscape theories, and critical writing is beginning to proliferate on the topic. LMJ23 gives this field a closer look by highlighting artists and composers from around the world who address the role of sound in art that wouldn’t necessarily be called "music." LMJ23 includes an accompanying CD, "sound—or its absence," curated by Seth Cluett and featuring tracks by James Webb, Catherine Béchard & Sabine Hudon, Maia Urstad, Tania Candiani, Keith and Mendi Obadike, Tetsuya Umeda, Pascal Broccolichi, Hong-Kai Wang, Benedict Drew, and Nina Katchadourian. The contemporary re-design of the environment we live in is in terms of visuals and visualizations, software interfaces and new modes of engagement and consumption. Leonardo Electronic Almanac (LEA) Vol. 19, No. 3: Live Visuals presents a series of seminal papers in the field, offering the reader new perspectives. Find out more

RELIVE: MEDIA ART HISTORIES
In Relive, the most recent release in the Leonardo Book Series from MIT Press, editors Sean Cubitt and Patrick Thomas have compiled the works of leading historians of the media arts that grapple with this dilemma: How can we speak of “new media” and at the same time write the histories of these arts? The contributors consider the idea of history and the artwork’s moment in time; the intersection of geography and history in regional practice, illustrated by examples from eastern Europe, Australia and New Zealand; the contradictory scales of evolution, life cycles and bodily rhythms in bio art; and the history of the future—how the future has been imagined, planned for and established as a vector throughout the history of new media arts. These essays, written from widely diverse critical perspectives, capture a dynamic field at a moment of productive ferment. Find out more
