ART, SCIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
FROM THE LEONARDO AND LMJ ARCHIVES
Leading up to the GLOBAL WARNING Symposium, we will be publishing
abstracts from papers that have been published in Leonardo and LMJ
over the years on art, science and the environment. Many of these
papers are available for free to current Leonardo and LMJ
subscribers. Papers published before 2005 are available through the
JSTOR digital archive.

"The Earth Music of Thramkrabok" by Phra Hans Ulrich Kaempfer and
Sheila Pinkel
ABSTRACT: Since 1981, Luang Paw Charoen Panchard, Abbot of Thamkrabok
Monastery in the Lopburi province of Thailand, has created music
based on shapes found in nature. Cracks in walls, stones or the soil
are traced onto transparent plastic sheets and transformed into
musical notes. Luang Paw believes that the process of making this
earth music results in spiritual healing and growth. [This paper was
originally published in Leonardo Vol. 37, No. 1, 2007, and is
currently available to Leonardo and LMJ subscribers through the MIT
Press web site.]

"Island Landscape: Following in Humboldt's Footsteps through the
Acoustic Spaces of the Tropics" by Daniel Velasco
ABSTRACT: The author describes his sound-image installation Island
Landscape and its inspirations: the flora and fauna of Cuba and the
writings of Alexander von Humboldt. Humboldt was a forerunner of the
acoustic ecology movement, which endeavors to preserve and record the
natural sounds of environments. Through his vividly written
descriptions of the sound landscapes of the New World, Humboldt
created a lasting work that continues to inspire artists today. [This
paper was originally published in Leonardo Music Journal Vol. 10,
2000, and is currently available to Leonardo and LMJ subscribers
through the MIT Press web site.]
