Over the last four days, 96 Palestinians have been killed, a third of them children. *This year alone, over 200 Palestinians have been killed* by Israeli forces. Best, Zeina ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- For half a century, the Lebanese singer Fairuz has been a living legend in the Arab world. Her home is Beirut, once a thriving seaport known as "the Paris of the Middle East," and a haven for those fleeing religious or ethnic persecution. In 1975, however, a civil war that was to rage for fifteen years disrupted this idyllic situation. Throughout the civil war Fairuz remained in Beirut, and everyone - whether Christian, Muslim, left-wing or right-wing, people from all the groups that were murdering each other - continued to love this singer with the nightingale voice. WE LOVED EACH OTHER SO MUCH portrays the love of diverse Beirut inhabitants for this diva. Through the music, and the myths that grew around Fairuz, they tell their life stories, and narrate the tragic, stirring history of their city. Their reminiscences, combined with Fairuz' songs and her story, provide a moving commentary on Lebanon's tumultuous history, traces of which are still visible in Beirut's devastated cityscape and bullet-scared building. Today Fairuz is a cultural phenomenon whose appeal has spread far beyond the Arab world. Offering viewers a revealing and captivating introduction to this singer, and her place in Lebanese history and culture, WE LOVED EACH OTHER SO MUCH also powerfully shows how music and the emotions it stirs can transcend political and religious differences. This will be my 2nd marathon running for the American Liver Foundation's Run For Research Team. The ALF is the nation's leading nonprofit organization promoting liver health and disease prevention. ALF provides research, education and advocacy for those affected by liver-related diseases including hepatitis. This year alone, liver cancer deaths rose by 10%. This is an alarming number and more needs to be done to save the lives of those affected - everyone deserves a chance to live and be healthy. Last year and this year, I have had the honor to run for a little boy named Dominic. Dominic is 13 years old and has had 3 liver transplants already. His body has rejected the first 2 transplants he got. The only thing that gets me through the long hours of training during the cold Boston winter is Dominic and the fight to keep him healthy. This cause is wonderful and I urge all of you to donate. Not tomorrow, or next week, but today - if you intend to, please don't put it off... You will forget. There is no better time. I'm not asking for any particular amount. No donation is too small or too big. Feeling tight with money? A mere 25$ from 200 people would yield 5000$. Is 25$ too much to ask? To eat 1 meal in at home rather than dining out? Is that too much to ask to help people like Dominic have a chance to live and maybe enjoy eating out? I would say not. You can make donations on my website: http://www.active.com/donate/liverteam08/gayleesaliba International credit cards are accepted and contributions are tax-deductible. From Egypt he received the Order of the Grand Collar of the Nile, the highest state honor, and postage stamps were issued to honor his contributions to science and humanity. He holds honorary degrees in the sciences, arts, philosophy, law, medicine, and literature from universities and institutions around the world including the U.S.A., England, Switzerland, Egypt, Belgium, Australia, Canada, India, Italy, Scotland, Korea, Sweden, France, China, Mexico, Ireland, Japan, Lebanon, and Argentina. He is an elected member of national and international academies and societies, including the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Achievement, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Arts, Sciences, and Humanities, the Royal Society of London, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences of Malaysia, and the French Academy of Sciences. He is on the Board of Trustees and Board of Directors of national and international foundations and universities, and holds the Honorary Chair at the United Nations University. Professor Zewail is renowned for his public lectures and writings encompassing science and technology, education and world affairs, and for his tireless efforts to help the population of the have-nots. In his recent biography Voyage through Time?Walks of Life to the Nobel Prize, he gives an expos? of his life and work until the receipt of the Nobel Prize, and he suggests a concrete course of action for the world of the have-nots and for a new vision of world order. Ahmed Zewail is the father of four children and lives in California. (Source: Professor Zewail's website) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The ceremony consists of the following awards: 1. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the career-long achievements of a leading scientist or technologist of Arab origin. 2. The Young Professional Award recognizes the early career achievements of a young Arab-American scientist or technologist. 3. The Student Awards, given to one Graduate student and one Undergraduate student, recognize the academic and leadership achievements of outstanding Arab students in any US campus. Each of these awards comes with a $1,000 cash scholarship. About this year's Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Dr. Ahmed Zewail: Ahmed Zewail is presently the Linus Pauling Chair Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Physics, and the Director of the Physical Biology Center for UST and the NSF Laboratory for Molecular Sciences (LMS) at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. Professor Zewail was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering developments in the field of femtoscience, making it possible to observe the movement of the individual atoms in a femtosecond, a split second that is a millionth of a billionth of a second. Such a development?which literally changed our view of the dynamics of matter?holds great promise in the areas of technology and life sciences. Currently his research interests include the biological sciences, the complexity of molecular function and the new development of ultrafast diffraction for the imaging of transient structures in space and time with atomic-scale resolution. Professor Zewail was educated in Egypt, received his B.S. (with first class honors) and M.S. from Alexandria University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His honors include more than 100 prizes and awards, Orders of Merit, and Orders of States from around the world. These include the Robert A. Welch Prize, Wolf Prize, King Faisal Prize, Benjamin Franklin Medal, Peter Debye Award, and the E. O. Lawrence Award. Falling from Earth. 2008. Lebanon/France. A true cinema poet, Chadi Zeneddine's poignantly surrealist debut film pays tribute to four lonely people trying to survive their own private wars in Beirut. These seamlessly woven chapters each reflect their own particular time and place. In 1958, a solitary little girl exchanges her world of toys and make-believe for a camera that captures the harsher reality outside. In 1975, a security official grieving over the loss of a loved one finds solace in the graffiti he reads and scrawls in a men's room. In 1982, a woman dances and weeps, waiting in vain for a missing lover. And in the present, Joussef has a magical encounter. Falling From Earth is a moving elegy for a lost homeland from a director whose talent and sensitivity imbue every frame. *New Directors/New Films* An intermittently engaging tone poem about the surreality of life in wartime Beirut, "Falling From Earth" offers four independent chapters (set in 2008, 1990, 1982 and 1975) that don't add up to a greater narrative whole. Debuting helmer Chadi Zeneddine, a Ph.D candidate in cinema studies at the Sorbonne, seems over-influenced by unconventional classics such as Jean Cocteau's "The Blood of a Poet," though he does manage to create some interesting visual textures with montages that incorporate faux homemovies and surveillance footage. Tech credits are adequate, with lensing and editing the standouts. *Variety * A cinematic poem that caters to the senses and strongly provokes memory, Falling From Earth is a new and powerful Lebanese independent film that is currently touring film festivals around the world. Told with a sharp auteur approach, the film makes of every recent Lebanese war a chapter. In each, a character's life plays out in a world where words are few but grand sentiments are expressed in special relationships to personal spaces, which gradually transcend into playgrounds for hopes and fears. >From abandoned buildings, charming Beiruti alleys, to public toilets, Zeneddine's film becomes an intimate artistic study of the Lebanese's subjection to war, creatively told with elaborate camera movements and punchy colors, free from any war movie clich?s of shelling and torn bodies. *Mahmovie!* An oblique rumination on the psychological and emotional wreckage wrought by years of war in Beirut, Falling from Earth is much symbolic gesturing in the dark. That director Chadi Zeneddine makes no concession to traditional narrative ...the influence of and yearning for home, the past, love, and a voice (both personal and political) are topics that freely commingle throughout these tales...Zeneddine's visual acumen allows for a stirring, tangible sense of the city and the sorrow, loneliness, and longing of its inhabitants, which is conveyed most powerfully through measured shots of the rubble-strewn urban landscape framed by windows or explosion-created holes in walls. *Nick Shager*.
