UDP packet size, truncated group lists?

I have read in some documentation that in versions prior to 1.3.1 there are some known issues because of the limitations of the UDP packet size that results in the truncation of group lists, and that this issue is present in both Solaris and Linux.  

If this is true could someone further describe this problem?
Is there a Solaris patch for this issue?
Is a workaround to limit the size of the group file?
