1. Apple Update iOS 5.0.1 Released

----------------------------------------------

Last week Apple released iOS 5.0.1, which brings enhancements and bug fixes to iOS 5, including:

  * Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  * Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  * Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  * Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

It also resolves the Smart Cover security issue on iPads, which has been widely reported (see the story here<http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/20/anyone-with-a-smart-cover-can-break-into-your-ipad-2/>).

iOS 5.0.1 is available for the iPhone 4S, 4, and 3GS, the iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), and all iPad models. The update is available for download now via iTunes, and should also be available over the air (by going to Settings > General > Software Update on your device). Prior to performing this update, we recommend that you sync your iOS device with your Mac or PC in order to backup data, apps and settings.

More on the software update is posted by Apple<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5052>. If you have any questions, please contact the Mobile Devices Team at mobile-help at mit.edu.

2. Boston Cyber Week, Nov 14 - 18

---------------------------------------------

The STOP. THINK. CONNECT. campaign is launching its Cyber Week program to engage communities to promote awareness and dialogue about the dangers Americans face online. The Cyber Week Program, will be rolled out in several cities in 2011-2012. It advances the DHS cyber mission by arming citizens with resources and tools needed to protect themselves, their families and the nation against growing cyber threats.

The Cyber Week Program brings together federal, state and local entities, industry, nonprofits, communities, and individuals for sustained engagement and dialogue on cybersecurity – emphasizing that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility.

Boston, Massachusetts has been selected as the first Cyber Week location: it is THIS WEEK, November 14 - 18. The details of the program are listed here<http://stcmessaging.pairserver.com/get-involved/homeland-security-program/cyber-week>.

3. U.S. Points Finger at Russia and China for Cyberattacks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

U.S. intelligence officials accused China and Russia earlier this month of systematically stealing American high-tech data for their own national economic gain. It was the most forceful and detailed public airing of U.S. allegations after years of private complaints. U.S. officials and cybersecurity experts said the U.S. must openly confront China and Russia in a broad diplomatic push to combat cyberattacks that are on the rise and represent a "persistent threat to U.S. economic security."

But experts said solving the problem won't be easy.

4. Computer Checkups

------------------------------

Has your computer had a security checkup lately? Just like having your own annual physical exam, a computer needs to have all systems checked on a scheduled basis.

Learn what should be checked out<http://netsecurity.about.com/od/secureyourwindowspc/a/Give-Your-PC-A-Security-Checkup.htm> here.
