1. MIT and National Cyber Security Awareness Month
--------------------------------------------------------------------

IS&T will be working with other groups at the Institute to provide some learning opportunities around cyber security as part of NCSAM (National Cyber Security Awareness Month). To kick off these efforts, on September 30th the IS&T booth at the Provider Fair (located on McDermott Court from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm) will be showing a short video on passwords and locking work stations. The video will also be posted online during the month of October (more information on this to come). Plus, if you stop by the Provider Fair and fill in the short security-related quiz at the IS&T booth, you automatically enter a raffle to win a $100 Amazon.com gift card. Stay tuned for more on these and other efforts as we get into October.

2. Additional STOP Tagging Dates This Week
----------------------------------------------------------

If you missed last week's STOP (Security Tracking of Office Property) tagging sessions in Lobby 10, you will have the opportunity to still get your laptop tagged this week.

Today, September 28 and tomorrow, September 29, the MIT Police are issuing STOP tags in the Stata Center on Student Street, the area right outside the cafeteria on the ground floor. They will be there from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Bring your laptop and $10 cash or your department's cost object to purchase.

-----------------------------------------------------------
3. Out of Band Security Bulletin from Microsoft
-----------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft intends to release one out-of-band security bulletin on September 28. The new security bulletin addresses a security vulnerability on ALL supported releases of Microsoft Windows. The security rating is listed as Important. A restart may be required.

The full security bulletin advance notification is available at:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Live Web Seminar on Cyber Defense for Higher Ed
--------------------------------------------------------------------

EDUCAUSE (www.educause.edu) is providing a free web seminar on "Effective Cyber Defense for Higher Education and the Nation" as a kick-off for National Cyber Security Awareness Month. This session will discuss why the U.S. needs to change the way the cybersecurity game is played, for the benefit of government, industry, colleges and universities, and the American people.

The web seminar is on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 1:00 pm EST. You can register online at:
