On Thursday, September 3, the MIT Police Crime Prevention Unit is
teaming up with IS&T to provide STOP (Security Tracking of Office
Property) tagging for laptops and other portable devices used by MIT
faculty and staff.
STOP tags are plates that are secured to your device with incredibly
strong glue. They include a barcode/tag number that can be recorded
into a worldwide tracking system. Your device will be registered upon
receiving a tag. If the tag is removed, the tattoo left behind states
"Stolen Property." To learn more, go to the IT Security Support: Loss
and Theft page <http://ist.mit.edu/security/support/physical>.
The tag costs $10 and can be purchased with cash or through an MIT
account. Just bring along the account information and name(s) to
charge it to. If you miss this event, the MIT Police provides the tags
as a community service each fall to anyone interested. Contact Sgt.
Cheryl Vossmer for details.
Please note that neither STOP tags nor cables are accepted devices for
MIT insurance waivers.

A Final Word
Don’t forget, there are other theft prevention measures you can take
with your laptop:
• Buy desk cables and locks (vendors are listed here: <http://ist.mit.edu/security/support/physical
>)
• Use extra caution when in public.
• Store it in a safe place.
For more information, contact Monique Yeaton (myeaton at mit.edu) or Sgt.
Cheryl Vossmer (crimbite at mit.edu).
Thank you,
Monique
